Lack of ethics in long range Hunting Breakdown

The trouble is ...Every Tom, Dick and Harry thinks that just because they have the latest and greatest cartridge they can make a clean 1 shot kill at 1000-1500 yds. Most times they have no shooting skills or hunting skills other than the camo they bought at Wall Mart.

Put me in the camp totally unethical to shoot a big game animal at long range. I call it shooting not hunting. Believe I owe my animal a quick as possible humane death. A wounded animal at that those ranges, good luck finding it. My personal limit is 400 hundred yards. A day spent humping a rifle and pack up and down all day maybe that could be called optimistic.

Range is an easily quantifiable parameter, conditions (wind , shooting position stability, etc) are semi quantifiable, the shooters ability not so much. We see plenty of hunters one week before season doing their annual visit to declare their 100yd zero is close enough, and wonder why they miss an animal at that range. Then there are plenty of guys shooting frequently who regularly shoot moa at 500yd, and know their limitations given field conditions. There is no simple definable line in the sand regarding an ethical shot.

I’ve seen it described as what is the max range you can hit a 6-8” circle, cold bore shot, with 100% confidence? Thats as far as you should shoot on medium game. Some guys thats 100-200 yards lol some it maybe 500-800. Its all in the shooters experience and equipment. I know in heat of the moment, opportunity can be rare so we sometimes take chances.. I myself tend to allow myself some margin in confidence, say 75-90% certainty in some instances depending on conditions. Like if snow on ground, tracking is greatly increased so if i do get a slight miss hit i still have high probability of finding game. Less ethical in a sense but i do tend to shoot larger caliber than needed and berger bullets are so damaging, if i get outside the 6-8” circle, i still think recovering game is highly certain. In the end you cant take that shot back so better to be cautious

All creators and posters need to concern themselves with their audience. If the audience is of limited skill, advice needs to be adjusted to fit them.

Nothing to see here for someone that can make a 100% solid hit in the exact right spot with a bullet of appropriate design going fast enough to do the job and leave a recoverable animal.

Have you noticed on the "long range" hunting shows that 90% of the time
the camera pulls away from the animal after the shot and focuses on the shooter.
I've heard that the animal flops around a bit cause the 1 shot didn't kill it right away
and they don't want that on camera.
I'm pretty sure they could have gotten a closer shot.
They want to sell these magical $8000+ rigs as 1 shot kills at any distance.
I refuse to watch them.

In Europe (except for hunting in Alps) in 99% cases the shot is taken within distance of 250m. During hunting apprenticeship people are recommended not to take a shot beyond 200m due to ethical reasons.

Have you ever noticed how many one shot kills they make with 4 or more pieces of empty brass on the ground next to the gun?

Or, they open the bolt to extract the brass and their 5 round magazine is empty.

In good conditions, an 800 yard shot on a 10" plate is simple.
It should be the same on a game animal. Unfortunately, some people get nervous and that 800 yard chip shot should be limited to 300 yards.

Just yesterday evening I was out calling coyote and watching some deer that were about 800 yds out and I thought wow that is a long way. I would never even consider a shot at that distance, but I am sure that some guys could make it with no problem. Just not me. Some have the ability and some don't.

The problem is those who don't have the ability who think they do. If you have EVER missed a 1000yd shot on a deer that is evidence its beyond your ability for a cold bore shot on live game. I look at National Level shooters on a bad condition day at a 1000yard match shoot a 13 inch group and wonder about the guys that shoot in those conditions hunting with less then an ideal set up and wonder if they pass up that shot in those conditions in the field. I hope they do, but do they? I hear some stories that lessen my respect for some.

I share your thoughts. Not my place to tell others what their abilities are. I regularly shoot my bow out to 80 yards, but absolutely will not shoot at an animal over 40, and that's if conditions are PERFECT!
