I got the 2 pounds of IMR 4198

That was quick. It arrived today.

here is a direct comparison on load density as compared to H4198.

The individual e kernels are longer. The color is entity different. I set my scal up and weighed 35 grns of each. The pictures tell the story.

The last picture is the IMR at 34 grns. All charges were dropped with a 10 inch drop tube With a slow drop.

As you can see, unless the IMR is at least 1 grn faster, getting it in there is a problem.

Next is to set my Ohler 35 Chrono up and see the velocity difference.DC3700F8-55E2-48BF-A5BC-94EDC9427E88.jpegF4958D43-C681-46CB-A9CF-ABFCAD507827.jpeg1FC1F54F-F793-4918-B12B-A26AE54FE22D.jpeg

Yeah IMR 4198 has some of the longest kernels of any powder. Makes it a pain to use and forget about using IMR 4198 in a powder measure because it won’t meter at all. That’s the main reason I steer clear of it. Plenty of other options out there that are easier to work with

It would be great if it performed as well as the H. It is readily available.

The Chargemaster Lite handled it fine. But I can certainly see the problems with a powder thrower.

Yeah it’s fine in a CM or if you are hand throwing the charges. I’ve never compared IMR 4198 directly to H4198 and it’s been many years (15 years maybe?) since I’ve tested IMR 4198, but it did shoot good and delivered good speeds for its burn rate. Biggest problem is that it’s not very temp stable.

Did you give up on LT30, Jackie? I was going to buy some for my hunting/ ranch 30BR to conserve my H4198 for my competition loads.
No, the LT30 shoots fine.

I’m just more curious about the IMR 4198 more than anything else. The general consensus is it will not hang with H4198.

since I have great access to our range, a good chronograph, and know my way around a 30 BR pretty well, I can devote a lot of time to answering age old questions.

Reflecting on the situation of components the last few years, you could go a few different ways with how much and what you post…

Speaking of which, have you been fishing lately? Where did you go?

30 BR
Tested Lt-30 vs V-130, temp was 66 degrees 65% rh. shooting 112 home made bullets.
The last time I did this LT-30 won the contest. Today V-130 won. Shot 50 rounds each.
Will test again next week. For some reason the LT-30 was dropping a shot out of the x ring.
Wind was at 2- O'clock 5 to 15mph. Shot over wind flags. Your mileage may very.

Larry, Ed and I were at Tomball last Sunday with our 30 BR’s, it was pretty cool, high 40’’s.

I had H4198, N130, and LT-30.

To our surprise, the worst for both of us was the N130, which has been shooting so well as of late…….in warmer weather. I figure it was on about a 17x tune.:(

LT-30 and the H 4198 were about equal.

Jackie, there been some promise seen up here with IMR.
Al , as you know I bought some IMR 4198 last year and wondered if I would find a difference from Hodgdon. I have a lot of recorded data with the Savage 223 and will find out this spring when it gets a little warmer.
My best loads with the 222 were with IMR 4198. My loading books didn't show Hodgdon. I used a trickle charger for my test loads with IMR...you have to.

It's still snowing and more to come so all I can do is think about it.

I was thinking that most are using a 22 to 23 inch barrel on 30br. If you tried a 24" or maybe a 25" barrel length with IMR 4198 could it perform as well as H-4198? What's say you? Hey if it don't make a difference its easy to shorten a barrel than length it.

Saw the thread, noticed the IMR 4198. Last year a guy locally was selling off a bunch of reloading materials, and I was able to buy an 8 pound sealed jug of it, but have not cracked the seal yet.

A friend tried to use it for 17 Hornet, but had to try to stuff the final kernels in with tweezers!

One rifle I was looking forward to load testing for is my Sako 222 I recently got off AS. Your comment is encouraging, wondered about your load. Can you share about the your good 222 load? How many grains, bullet, and speed? I'll work up my own safe load, but curious, thanks!

19,4 gr IMR 4198 , Win brass and primer. 50 gr Hornady bullet made a nice 5 shot hole about the size of my thumbnail. I shot this out of a Rem 722. Book velocity was 3200 fps.
It's a great little cartridge.

Thanks, I've only shot it with LT-32 and N133 so far, 50 Vmax, didn't get very much time to test so far, but I figured the IMR 4198 had a great reputation for the 222, and I'll give that a go soon as the snow is gone and I can get good weather again.
