Rust in lands on SS !

Good day

I watched a video on cleaning a stainless steel barrel, it said you should be very careful on cleaning, rust could form under the copper left in the bore.
I never thought much about stainless rusting, did you?

Barrel 400 series stainless will rust, pit and corrode and is magnetic. 300 series has a different chemical makeup and is resistant to those properties.

400 Series Stainless

The 400 series group of stainless steels has an 11 percent chromium and 1-percent manganese increase, above the 300 series group. The 400 series is susceptible to rust and corrosion under some conditions. Heat-treating will harden the 400 series. The 400 series of stainless steels have higher carbon content, giving it a martensitic crystalline structure. This provides high strength and high wear resistance. Martensitic stainless steels aren’t as corrosion resistant as the austenitic types.

I don't worry too much about interior rust, I'll probably regret it someday, but it'll be a good excuse to re-barrel. I do clean my guns well after a rainy range day, including removing the action from the chassis to dry things out.

One time I lost interest in shooting. I had a bunch of young kids and family things to focus on. That led to a 6mm barrel going uncleaned for 8'ish years, shot with moly bullets, and never saw any ill effects. I've heard that moly is especially bad for holding moisture. Maybe it's luck or my climate, I'm not sure, but worrying about interior corrosion is not where I need to waste time right now.

sold guns in store front, back in the 80s a ruger MKII came in that was stainless, and covered in rust from distributor. Returned...they do rust.

A dirty bore left with some humidity can cause corrosion issues.
Spots and worms.
I definitely clean more judiciously now that I’m living in the wet side of the state.

I have always wondered if the Tubb Final Finish Bullets would take out the light rust. I think I got the name right. I bought a Stainless TC Encore from a friend who had his safe in the garage with dehumidifiers and it rusted in the bore and barrel and receiver. He lost several nice weapons to rust. Inside and out.

Last thing I do after cleaning is run an oil patch through the barrel. First I do upon arriving at the range is run a dry patch through it. I am 85 years old and have never had rust on any firearm I have owned with the exception of a few I bought used. Oil is your friend.

Browning bolt action stainless steel, left in closet, in gun case, from one deer season to the next. Light rust on everything, had to disassemble completely, had to re-bead blast everything. Gun cases are a moisture magnets.
