Old 40x action

troupe

Gold $$ Contributor
I have a old 40X repeater center fire action. The action is in good shape, but I was considering having someone blue it back to factory standards. It is a polished blue but it would need some cleaning up. Can't see any pits that I can tell. It does not have a barrel on it, also when did Remington start with stainless barrels. I wish Remington could do the work. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

The place down in Wyoming. Glenrock Wyo I think. Can't remember the name. Someone here will know. I used them before. I give them 5 stars.

Thanks, also any idea if my rifle came with a chrome moly barrel or stainless. Serial is 301XX B range 5 digit serial. Curious if I get a chrome moly or stainless. Jus trying to keep it as close to factory as possible. Also, would it be stamped 308 or 7.62 nato

7.62 or 7.62 NATO Only curious for the accuracy of my rebuild. Know I just have to research if it would be a chrome moly or stainless barrel.

I think centerfire 40Xs had stainless barrels at least back to the late 60s. I don't recall seeing a blued factory centerfire barrel (rimfires we shot in military smallbore were not stainless finish).
There are probably people on here who know.
Good luck with your project.

I've only seen one model of 40x in 7.62 NATO that had a parkerized finish and that is the 40X Tactical. All the rest have been stainless

Remington had a process of putting an iron finish on the SS barrels that allowed them to blue them, so some SS were blued. The early 40X were built on the 722 receiver and the later on SA 700 receivers. I believe they were marked 7.62 NATO

Here is Remingtons Custom shop number, 605-702-0060 Ask for Ward, he has run the custom shop for the last 30 years. Now called Parkwest Arms.

Ward Dobler graduated from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in 1992 and began working for Dakota Arms shortly after. Remington bought Dakota in June of 2009. Remington moved the Custom Shop to Sturgis SD in 2015. No one by the name of Ward Dobler worked in or managed the Remington Custom shop in Ilion NY.

I'm sorry I didn't get his last name when I spoke with him about the barreled actions that PTG was selling. He was a very nice gentleman, we talked for about 20 minutes or so. He said they are also Dakota Arms and could build you any kind of custom rifle you want.
