204 Ruger Bullet Splash

Don’t waste your time with the 32 vmax on coyotes. Especially with that 10 twist. A buddy of mine has good results with the 40 vmax, but he’s only pushing them around 3600fps.
Copy that.

I was more interested in showing the gel shot of the 32gr V-Max after hitting the poplar wood.

Regardless, no problem.

Sitting on some Hornaday 45 grain soft points that Ive only tested on paper. They look like they'd pass through a coyote but I don't know. Heck, they look like they'd work on deer or hogs too. Accuracy was good but not like my 39 SBK/Benchmark load.

Rifle is a stock Browning micro with 12 twist that will not stabilize the 40gr vmax or NBT.

The Hornady 45gr SP did excellent in my poplar board/gel test.

I probably could have used just (1) 1/4" poplar board, but I thought that 2 pieces would be more indicative of the worst case scenario.

Some fine folks here on 6mmbr are sending me other bullets to test for a follow-up video!

Specifically, 35gr and 40gr Berger, and the 40gr BIB bullets.

Stay tuned!!

So that some of us better understand, or at least me anyway, could you describe "Bullet splash" in more detail?

Is it poor penetration, no penetration?? And how and to where is the bullet's energy dispersed when it splashes? Thanks! Love your videos. WD

Typically on game animals.

Bullet splash = penetration lacking into the vital organs resulting in lost game.

Thanks for the quick reply, and where does the bullet's energy go when it splashes entirely upon the game? Thanks. WD

Bullet splash can best be described as "blowing" up on the surface at impact...the velocity and how fragile the bullets are can sometimes "blow up" on impact and just create a "surface" wound not allowing the bullet to penetrate into the vitals. Usually you can decrease the velocity some and get away from this happening or you will notice it happening less if your shots are at farther distances and the bullet has scrubbed off some velocity.
Hope this makes sense.

If you watch the 1st bullet in my video, the Barnes 26gr Varmint Grenade. The bullet penetrated both 1/4" poplar boards easily. As the bullet entered the gel block it was already in pieces as evidenced by the lack of "neck" in the gel. And the large expansion of the gel block immediately but only in the first 2-3".

If you look at the Lehigh Defense 30gr CC and Hornady 45gr SP, there is a longer neck which shows that some of the bullet was still intact.

The Lehigh Defense 30gr CC has the classic wound channel through the gel ( 6" - 8" in length)

The Hornady 45gr SP did better with 10" of penetration.

The Sierra 39gr BK was also decent (6" penetration), I apologize because I did not hit REC when I was examining the gel block on the video!

Ya, I am using a Thermion XP50 now...those 2 videos of mine are with a Pulsar Trail XQ38. The Thermion is awesome and is on its second season...really nice scopes.
