SLUG hunters help me

let me start by saying, I am not a great hunter or a great shot. I have chased, tracked, wandered around in the dark for many a white tail deer, but this season I would like to change that. my question is are slugs pretty much a drop in its tracks ammo? we dont have a slug only season here and almost nobody I know hunts with them, so feel free to throw in your comments.

thanks

I especially want to hear from hunters from slug only states

I live in the part of Michigan that is shotgun only, I’ve seen many deer shot with slugs... many don’t make it far but just last year a good friend of mine who I trust .. says he put a decent shot on a buck at 125yds... tracked in a heavy snow storm.. lost blood never recovered ... that being said.. it’s a chuck of lead normally does a nice job... I now use a 450bm instead as I think it has many advantages ....

my shots are all going to less than 50 yds if that, thanks for the info

Slugs are not a drt option any more than rifles. I have shot deer with slugs that dropped them in their tracks, and I have shot them where they ran for what seemed like miles.

I am of the mind that shot placements that interrupt nervous activity seem to be the best chance for drt.

For what its worth I shoot a savage 212 with winchester 385 3"

I'm in Michigan, and have been hunting white tail in the slug only area for many years, weapon of choice is my 12ga. Browning Gold with factory rifled slug barrel, I use exclusively the Remington copper solid slug, the accurately is very consistent, and hit like a ton of bricks, every time I hit one in the neck shoulder area, they drop in there tracks, shot 4 last year, longest shot so far 160 yrds.

If you don't have a rifled barrel, you will have the best luck with a 12-gauge standard slug that is as close to .730" or a bit more as possible. I used to use Federal slugs and did very well (usually 3" or less at 50 yards) from a modified choke 12-gauge and deer never traveled more than 50 yards. I later found the now defunct Activ slugs and could easily get that same 3" at 75 yards. Glad I bought a case of them before they quit making them.

I'm in a farm zone, my buddies and I have all gone to the Savage 220. The Hornady,Rem,Federal sabots are all very accurate and there have been many 1 shot kills and very short blood trails. We sight in about 2"" high at 50 yards, which is a 100 yard zero. I scored a life time supply for all of us, 3" Federal fusion sabots.

Make no mistake, there is a reason why nobody uses slug guns in rifle country. I live in a part of my state that has always been slug only...up until this year, they allow "straight wall" rifles. First I will say that I have tracked too many {some I shot, some by others} deer that appeared to be hit good only to have the blood dry up and the deer never recovered. The forced use of slugs is not because they were purpose designed to kill deer, it's because they are generally safer in populated areas.
Second, as testimony to the sad performance of slugs I will attest to the fact that many deer hunters are going with straight wall rifles in the hope that their chances of recovering a hit deer will improve.
Third, in my own case as well as several others, I hunt with a bow. I own a very accurate slug gun that will hit a clay target at 100 yards easy. I also own several straight wall rifles and I own a lot of land so I could {illegal} hunt with anything I want. If your broadhead is hair popping razor sharp you will see the deer fall with a good hit every time. I definitely cannot say that with slugs.
I remember the first time I went to Alaska and the conversation turned to self defense bear guns...all the locals I talked to said, "a 12 gauge slug"...I was struck by that because I wouldn't bet on that to kill a 100 pound whitetail and they are betting their lives on it against a brown bear!!!
Bottom line, I have personally lost too many trophy deer to count on a slug gun. Couple that with the tracking events that resulted in the same thing for others and I say it's this simple, yes you can kill a deer with a slug. Yes I have seen many drop DRT in their tracks and not move again, but the ones that got away killed it for me.

Edit: I started hunting in 1975 and as a gunsmith for most of my time hunting I saw first hand the advancement of the slug gun. Back then you simply used the same shotgun you quail hunted with. We have come a long ways since smooth bores with just a bead and Foster slugs that dropped 6 inches at 50 yards to rifled scoped sabot slugs that will hit a deer out to 150...but in spite of all those improvements a slug gun is still not appropriately effective for me. Just to be clear, hitting a deer with a slug is not the problem. A slug is just not a very effective killer.

it was slug only around here all my life until very recently . (50 + of my 60 some years). I can remember a couple hunters who where shot in the chest by 12 gauge slugs and survived.

I have had excellent results on big Michigan bucks with 20 gauge shooting shotgun shells featuring Barnes saboted bullets. Have had kills to 200 yds. Split the front leg with the vertical chair, horizontal quarter of the way up the deer, it's dead quickly. Don't forget to squeeze the trigger.

I have to ask.....exactly what high powered rifle are you using ??? Let me make sure I got this right...you can use a high powered rifle where you hunt, {almost} nobody else uses a slug gun in your area for deer, but your experience with your rifle is so poor that you seek a more effective option and you think a slug gun is the answer. Buddy, what rifle are you using now????

I hunted with slugs for years both forster and saboted.
The only DRT's were when the spin was hit.
I have seen heart and double lung shot deer run well in excess of 100 yards before dieing.
In thick woods that can make a tough recovery especially with a high lung hit that doesn't leave much blood trail.
When New York legalized rifle where I hunt I was amazed what a little 25 cal bullet does to a deer.
300 yard lung shot and the deer literally falls where it was standing.

It ain't what you shoot them with it is where you shoot them. Shoot them in the center to upper 1/3 of the front shoulder and they will drop in their tracks most of the time because it takes out the spine as well as the heart and lungs. There is not that much REAL meat in this portion of the front shoulders. If you are worried about loosing too much meat then be good at tracking because "heart shot deer" usually run off a ways even though they are dead on their feet and often do not leave a good blood trail because there is nothing to pump the blood out with. Lung shot deer will run until enough blood is lost for them to collapse but usually leave a good blood trail because the heart is still pumping blood.

I am wondering the same thing. No offense meant.
What cartridge and where are you hitting them? I can’t imagine hitting a whitetail deer in the chest with anything from a 243 on up and it not killing it quickly. I know.... they can run a ways sometimes, I have hit them in the heart with a 150 out of an ‘06 and still have them run 100 yards, but almost always leave a blood trail.
