6.5 CM can’t get any velocity, opinions please

Wow, $80 to look at the bore and he says the throat must be burned out at 290 rds....

If you do want to take a look at the bore yourself for half the price he is charging, these Teslong bore scopes actually work very well:

Also, powder wise, I've gone to RL16 almost exclusively in my 6.5s, but have a friend who prefers RL17 and has had no problem knocking over a decent pile of Muleys, Antelope and Elk with his loads.

Yeah that guy might have thought he got a saami .199 but he didn’t. That smith sounds pretty shady. I would definitely go elsewhere.
I’m considering a 1.250 straight barrel around 30” finished in 6.5 CM when I take it in I’ll probably have the new shop take a look and figure it out, just to know what the issue is.

If you can find it, try some RE26.

My field notes on it with 146gr, show 2860’s. Peterson cases. No swipe.

You can still get that barrel to work with a good smith cleaning up the chamber. I would have that done and see what happens but if you wanted heavier and longer then go for it. Just put a new M24 contour at 28" on my new action tonight. Can't wait to get out and shoot it.

Unless you have a tight bore or a tight neck (below SAAMI spec.), you should be able to get the throat extended with a throating reamer and solve your problem. Jamming a bullet deep in the lands will certainly raise pressure. I have a 26" Criterion drop-in barrel that shoots well; with 41.5 gr. of H4350, 140 Sierra and 210M primer, it gets 2850 fps avg. (Oehler chrono.) using Hornady brass and no hard extraction or extractor swipes. There is nothing wrong with wanting best performance out of a caliber as well as good accuracy, and there's no reason not to get it.

I Have a Remington (blue printed) with a custom barrel 8 twist stainless.. anyways it won’t chamber some factory rounds, they are too long. I have to run a oal of like 2.780 or maybe slightly longer if it’s a super pointy bullet like a vld. The most I can get from it is 2650 running 40.2 grains of H4350 and I get an ejection swipe around that, and that’s using Peterson srp brass

I have some really accurate loads running 42.5 of 4831 but it only goes 2550. I was happy until I recently got a lab radar and started seeing what my speeds are.

I got this rifle from someone second hand, however I know the gunsmith and have had rifles built by them before, what would you do?
I’m at a loss..
I’d take it to the smith and ask him to quote fixing his work and I’d like to see the reamer drawing. My factory Savage will push a 140 RDF to 2850+ (26”) with only minor ejector swipes in the same Pete SRP brass.

dollar to a donut it was chambered with a pre-SAAMI reamer and the throat is way too short.

So I got the cheap o borescope, pretty cool, I had a nice look around and no real carbon ring, had a little copper, but in the first 2 inches I found 3 spots that looked like someone touched a welder to the inside of the bore, fire cracking just starting to appear like something that would have 400ish rounds.. idk I’m at a loss, will probably take to another smith and do a chamber cast

I may just do a new barrel, idk, need to save some cash for now..

That’s kind of crazy being a good barrel and so few rounds. Might just be a combo of a short freebore and a bad barrel. If you wanted to give something a try you could throw some Tubb TMS rounds through it. Obviously won’t hurt the freebore but may smooth down some of the rough spots. At this point it’s worth a try.

It really seems that ur speed may be directly related to barrel length. Have been shooting creedmoor for about 10 years i think, burned out a lot of barrels, done a ton of load development, barrel length is important. Good luck, remember if it is grouping be happy.

What’s the shortest barrel length that you would be comfortable with on the Creedmoor? The reason I’m asking is thinking about one in a truck gun. 23 inches would be about the right length for me , if that doesn’t compromise speed.

His velocity for a 24" barrel is slow and with him jamming factory rounds there is more than a barrel length issue.

McGaw, I only use my rifles for matches and run them at 27-28" but have a 22" AR also and for a truck gun that won't be seeing an abundance of 1000 yard shots a shorter barrel would be fine.

Remember u want the powder to burn in the barrel. i wouldnt go less than 23, my guess for comfort would be 24. Nothing official just an opinion.

You do realize of course that is 6.5mm-06 and 6.5x284 velocity out of a Creedmoor?
Not really, even though the usual reloading manuals indicate so. For some reason, they don't approach the speeds that most competitors load up to (holds true for 6 BR also). I've shot out a couple of 27" barrels in 6.5-284 that I've usually run at around 2950-3000 fps using H4831sc with good accuracy @ 1000 and good brass life. Refer to the load data for 6.5-284 on this site.

I'm not the guy you asked, but I had my hunting 6.5 CM cut to 20" and threaded to run suppressed. Here are my loads and velocities.

-127gr LRX, 43.5gr RL-16, H case, CCI200: ~2,850 fps.
- 140gr BTs, 42.2gr RL-16, H case, CCI200: ~2,700 fps.
- 142gr ABLR, 43gr RL-16, H case, CCI200: ~2,730 fps.

All healthy loads, but within Alliant data for same or similar bullets. Test loads I tried with RL-26 were faster, and showed promise, but I didn't have enough of that magic fairy powder left to do a whole lot of development.

I'm thinking about getting a 6.5 Barrel for my Sig Cross, and if I do, I'll probably go with an 18", plenty of performance for anything I hunt at the ranges I'll be hunting while not being too dangly with a can on the end.

Those are great velocities for that length of barrel.
