I am in Level 1 fire evac, meaning we are packed and ready. I think the fire is about 9 miles away right now. They are not fighting the fire, which has grown to 105,000 acres, but are evacuating people and protecting structures. There is a LOT of smoke.
I THINK we will be okay and our house won't burn, but we are ready regardless. If it goes to Level 2 we will evacuate to my daughter and son-in-law's house. Level 2 is voluntary evac, Level 3 is go now.
What is interesting is prioritizing what we are taking. Basically filling up my pickup and my wife's Acadia. I have an exceptional gun safe, with four layers of fireboard and a Paulosol (sp?) seal. This safe is rated for very high heat for 2 hours. The seal will swell under heat and keep out smoke. Unless flames directly impinge in the seal, everything in the safe should be fine. So most of my guns are in the safe as is some of my wife's special dishes. (She likes dishes, not jewelry.)
If the worse case scenario happens, here are the guns I decided to take with me. A 300 WSM hunting rifle on an M-70 SS action in a McMillan Hunters Edge stock and with a Benchmark barrel. This is my go to deer rifle. I am also taking the rifle I just chambered for myself in 33-28 Nosler. It's a SS new M-70. I am taking my Winchester 101 Sporting shotgun. For defense I did throw in my AR as well as three handguns. I did not take any of my LR BR guns, pre 64 M-70s, or other rifles.
I grabbed ammo for all the handguns and AR as well as the reloading stuff for the 300 WSM and 33-28. I also packed up about 50 lbs of powder and all my primers--all in 1" thick wooden boxes. Mostly to get the most flammable stuff out of the garage and reduce the powder in the garage. There are still two 1" thick wooden boxes with 50 lbs of powder each.
I am leaving the auto throw/trickler/ Sartorius combo. Leaving the Hydro Seater. I grabbed my old RCBS 10-10. I did unbolt and load the Prazipress I just bought. I did not grab many of my specialized reloading tools and components, just what I needed to load for the 300 WSM and 33-28. I did pack my Sinclair competition rest and stuff for me to shoot. I grabbed my Leica binocs and just a couple items of hunting clothes.
I am taking three of my five trumpets, my desktop computer, important papers, and all my aviation stuff for the flying I have been doing lately.
My wife chose her desktop, laptop, and reference materials needed for her business. She took the Mauviel copper cookware I got for her a couple Christmases ago as well as one special living room picture.
Hopefully, this is was all just a waste of time, but if not, and the house burns, it's only stuff......
