.300 PRC or .300 Win Mag

I'll be gathering information from members here that shoot the 300PRC regarding brass, powder, etc. Once my rifle is done I certainly want first hand experience from guys I KNOW have it. I love my 300 WM but it's time to move forward and see what the 300PRC offers accuracy and performance wise. It's designed for the new long heavy bullets with the long case neck and a 9 twist barrel should run them well. A buddy is running the 300 NM so we will be shooting side by side comparing performance and precision of both rifles. Pretty excited about it.

I have extensive notes on various bullets, primers, powders. Just got some of the new 220 Bergers to play with next. 215s in mine are excellent.

I'm hoping that's an offer to pick your brain down the road. I have a few other members that offered as well to give advice. Appreciate it. John

Was shooting 300WM at 600 yds yesterday. 220g lapua senar L, 68.5g Rl-22, CCI 250, PPU brass case (new). Shot 14 shots hitting a 6" "X" ring 12 times and 2 just below in the 10 ring. Was fireforming brass. Wind was worth watching where I had to hold into the right side of the x ring and at times into the 10 ring at 3 o"clock. All in all it's a very accurate round.

I should have phrased that different. ADG is great brass if that's what you start with. I wouldn't hesitate to use it with the correct Dies. Mine are Custom and Peterson more closely duplicates Lapua dimensionally. Just past experience with other offerings. I have enough Prepped Hornady to last a couple of barrels. Plus, I'm happy with the performance and price. You just can't step on the Hornady stuff to hard though. My first experience with Hornady brass and not unhappy with it. Sorry for any confusion.

There's no question the .300 Win Mag is an accurate round. For a handloader especially, a person can make it sing.

Jmo, no dog in the fight, but Id look at a 300wsm or 300 norma AI if I wanted a big 30 cal. I shy away from belted cases, that throws out the wm for me.

Edit for the AI... it was late when I typed it, thats what I meant.

Hard to beat the 300NM but needing a Lapua bolt face action, it think a person can get almost the same performance from a 300 PRC. Close enough anyway. I guess for me the idea of an improved 300 NM is the most appealing. It really makes the NM shine. I'm pretty sure someone could use a Remington LA and Lapua bolt for a project but the bigger action is probably the best choice for that cartridge.

Are you talking components are loaded ammo?

What does it matter if your handloading?

Admittedly the WM has more options in brass, but they can use the same primers, powders and bullets.

Well Rick- I hand load and can NOT find any 300 win mag in Norma brass and have not found any in over a year and am changing brass companies so it DOES matter even if you hand load. H1000 is getting harder to find... Do any of you guys remember how hard it was to find Retumbo and Fed215s about 6 years ago?? Seems to be happening again.... So availability is big with me. I am starting to see lots of reloading shortages. JMO

IF YOU SAY SO!

its my understanding that a belted magnum gets head spaced off the belt initially... then once you fire the case you can go off the shoulder for headspace.... the go and no go gauges i used for my 300 win mag doesnt even have a shoulder on it... you set head space with the belt...
