wanting a 6BR Varmint rig

Curious about the Savage 12 rifles 12LRPV and the 12 F in 6BR ive had, built several custom guns for long range dog shooting 22-250 ai ,220 swift , 22BR , 223 all built with older DGA actions jewell triggers Shilen barrels ect... but the price point of these Savage rifles has me interested any experience or feedback would be appreciated will they shoot .250 5 shot at 100 yards after tuning ????

In my humble opinion they are well worth it. I personally like the model 12 right bolt left port as are easy to load and shoot or my favorite, the dual port. You can save $. by buying used , change barrels , calibers even, are very accurate even in factory trim. Quarter inch groups depends on a lot as you well know, the biggest one is you . Half inch ,yes and approaching your quarter inch. In my opinion they’re worth buying.

I have two in 223 with 1:7 twist. I bought one used and one new. The serial numbers were pretty far apart, and they came from very different places, but they both shared a common problem. They would only light Black Hills factory ammo, and my reloads with Rem 7 1/2 primers. They were both very unreliable with just about everything else.

I ended up debugging them with help from this and other forums. I had to change to Wolff aftermarket firing pin springs on both of them. They now ignite 100% of anything I throw in them using the 36# springs.

I also had to do some minor tweaks to the stocks and bolt torques to get them to perform. They are now 1/2 MOA with my leftover match ammo, and nearly that with BHA 77 OTM and TMK 77 grain. I would not call them capable of 1/4 MOA. I use a standard of 10 rounds, not three.

Once they were fixed, they were okay. I have seen other examples of the same model in 223 and other calibers that were so crooked that they required custom orthopedic mounts to boresight. One example In 204 was sent back and they didn’t return it to the owner because the bbl and receiver were way off alignment. So, like many other popular brands, they have their good ones and their bad ones.

I have not made up my mind if I will keep these or punt when the bbls are done. The bolt lifts are not what I would call smooth and they require more torque to open than many other guns I have. That equates to sight disturbance if you need a follow up shot.

I would suggest you try one before you buy one. If you really want < 1/2 MOA, I would pass.

Since you already have a 22br..... why not just get a barrel chambered in it for 6br and just switch the barrels out?? Personally, I'd NOT go the factory rifle route. The factory barrels are very unpredictable as far as quality and consistent accuracy. JME. WD

I got very good use out of a Savage BVSS IN 223 . Fast twist but shot 50 gr Hornady sx and 40 gr Nosler. Had the trigger set so light it needed adjusting about every 500 rounds. My choice on that problem. Shot it two trips with no breakage. I dont like Savage but give the devil his due.

My factory gun gamble would be a rem 700 single shot, a Criterion 6br barrel and boyds pro varmint. My rem triggers have adjusted down to my satisfaction.

good choice outta the box.....

accurate yes.....barrel rough yes......

remember its not a hand finished Pac Nor

I have a Savage RBLP Target action, 26" shouldered Kreiger LV 6br, single shot. PRT Lowboy stock. Almost 800 rounds down it. I bought used and have never shot it myself. If interested PM me.

what you want for it any trigger work

I bought a brand new Savage 6BR LRPV with the 8 twist barrel. It was stupidly cheap on special. I thought I could use it as a varmint rifle come F Class rifle and I'd always heard about how accurate Savages were supposed to be. The first one I purchased had a lovely ring cut right around the muzzle a 1/4" in and that went back to the distributor who promptly replaced it. I second one, the barrel was rough as a cobbled road, but seemed to run in ok. I ditched the accu-trigger for a rifle basix unit, put a rail in the front end for my F Class bipod, loaded 30gr of varget with a CCI BR primer and a 105gr Berger Hybrid and that gun shot like no factroy rifle I've ever owned. I've still got a group I kept somewhere that my gunsmith shot at 400yards out on the F class range. It's a bullet width and a half high and 5/8" across. I sold that rifle recently to make way for more toys, not sure I should have. Would I buy another Savage? Probably not, but I will always remember the one I owned fondly.

I found a few pics including that group. For foxes I used a load that came straight off 6BR.com. 75gr vmax, 10thou into the lands and varget powder. Shot better than I could hold the gun.

Why not buy a Savage action? Buy a bbl ( Shilen?) / pick a brand. Buy a Rifle basix trigger/ pick one. Buy a stock and you are set. I did it. I bought a Savage PTA.

Bolt lift. Unless you have a VERY heavy Savage, it can be almost impossible to preserve sight alignment while cycling the action.

Savages are perfectly fine if you have the time to regain your aim. The bolt lift is a minor annoyance of varying consequence depending on shooting discipline.

I built/am building up two 12FVs and will move on from Savage for any future projects. I’ve decided that a custom/aftermarket action is absolutely worth the cost in most cases.

Actions almost never wear out and amortizing the cost of a $1600 action across $3000 worth of barrels and $5000 worth of other consumables seems like the smart play long term.

Same for a high end optic that has a lifespan of decades.

I will have Remington 700 6br, 6bra, and 6xc stainless varmint barrels available with varmint freebores. They are on pre order for $235 each.

You can order an action from Buds for $340.

$340 Action
$235 barrel
$32 recoil lug
$34 barrel nut
Picatinny rail is $40

That's a little over $650. Just need a stock.

I suggest the 6bra or 6xc with 50 freebore. You will absolutely love it.

The 6xc with 50 freebore 8 twist man... that's the one. Should be insane for varmints.

You can always go to Walmart and buy a Remington 700 in 308 for $379. Then all you would need is the barrel and nut to convert it to 6br, 6bra, 6xc, etc.

Armslist is full of 308 Remington donor rifles.

Here is my barrel in 6bra 1-8 50 freebore shooting 80 grain Bergers and 108 Bergers

My Savage model 12 6BR Dual port Right Bolt was trouble till I had @Grimstod do the bolt lift and firing pin bushing. It cost less and was shipped faster than I thought possible. I think Savage still has large firing pin holes regardless how big the firing pin really is. Load development was simple. 29.7 - 30.3 grains of Varget and CCI 450 magnum small rifle primers. Easily 1/2 MOA at 100 with 105 gr Bergers. I gave up tweaking the original accu-trigger and replaced it with a Rifle Basix. Clean break down to 8oz. It's now getting a new brux barrel as the factory barrel would shift POI after 20 fast rounds and move me out of the x-ring (3 in @ 600). I bought mine from this forum knowing where Savage isn't great and fixed those couple of things.
It's a solid multipurpose rifle and i'm looking forward to phase ii with the new barrel.

If you are looking for this Savage 6Br to be a repeater you better be ready to swap out bottom metals and modify a mag. I tried using the factory BM with the short action box mag In my 12LRP and results were disappointing. I currently use an AccurateMag Bottom metal with a magpul mag w/ spacer. Feeding is nearly 100% reliable and ejections is about 75%.

I’m currently shooting a 24”CBI 8twist barrel and 70tnts with good success and very small group. Not quite .25” but I haven’t done much tuning to speak of.
