30BR Repeater in 700SA Footprint

Spent some time with this little rifle & my 11 year old son yesterday at the ranch. It was awesome. He has a bunch of video of my ugly mug and drone footage, too. He'll be editing and producing it in the coming days. Should be fun.

The Cliff notes:
  • It's a blast to shoot.
  • In terms of accuracy, best I can tell it's a 30BR!
  • Shots 39, 40 & 41 chronoed the same as shots 3, 4 & 5. 2,930 FPS. Barrel didn't speed up.
  • It shot a respectable 3 shot group at 531 yards off a bag of corn and the tailgate of the Polaris. The bullet is going trans sonic at 525 yards. LOL
  • I was able to push a 125 SST to 2,859 FPS with no pressure. I don't think I can get more powder in there without a bunch of effort. The heel is pretty much at the N/S junction. I'll probably just run it there. For a 16" barrel, that's pretty darn good, IMO.
  • It deserves better glass. Darn. That's gonna cost me!
  • It cleaned up easy after 41 rounds. Very little copper. Thanks @Hoodoo

Thinking about putting together a lightweight, short(ish) barrel, suppressed ranch stalking/ fun rifle in 30BR. Has anyone done this in a 700 footprint action? I have a AG Comp stock I could use that's inletted for the 700 with PTG/ Stocky's "Stealth" AICS pattern bottom metal. Also have several mags. Would it work? Would I need the Primal Rights magazine kits? Could I get away with the sloppy firing pin clearance in a Remington action? Don't want to break the bank and there are some SS R700s in the classifieds for $355. Then again, I don't want to be penny wise and dollar foolish. What says you, almighty membership?

How in the world did that dude find pressure at 31.5gr of 4198 & a 125gr BT? Do those actions have huge firing pins/ sloppy fit? I wouldn't think so. Has anyone here experienced this? Hell, I started at 32.8 with a 125 flat base SST. Ran it up to 34.0gr without pressure. Am I the irresponsible one? I did have history from another rifle with my batch of powder... I'm pretty new to the 30BR, but everyone I know is 34-35+ with a 112 to 118.

I'd be super interested in what a 155 would do in the 30br, but I don't think your twist will stabilize it.

No, it wouldn't. In fact, the 125 SST may be marginal. Plugging in the bullet length, twist and MV into Ballistic AE, it gives me Miller Stability of .98. Way low, but I don't know how the plastic tip affects that number. I'll test it more & decide. I may end up shooting BIB 118s.

I did shoot 5 more 125gr SSTs with 34.0gr H4198 over the MagnetoSpeed today. Discarding the 1st shot (clean bore) it averaged 2,856 FPS with an 8.6 SD. I'm impressed with the speed in such a short barrel (16.1").

Nice rifle.
You kept talking good scoped for not a lot of money.
Check out a SWFA 6x or 10x I believe you can get them new for around $300.
Built like a tank, with great glass.

New glass is in from the good folks at EuroOptic. Vortex Razor Gen II E 1-6x24. Picked up some NF Ultralight rings from the classifieds last night.

Loaded up more 125 SSTs 34.0, 34.2 & 34.4gr. Can’t get more than 34.4 in there. I also loaded up some BIB 118-10s. Getting 35gr is no problem there. They might end up being the ticket. The loaded OAL of 2.34” seems about perfect for the modified magazine.

My 11yr old son videoed, edited, produced this video documenting an awesome day. It was my first trip out with this rifle. It’s riddled with errors, inconsistencies, violated safety protocols & other proof that I’m no expert-but that’s not the point. We had an awesomely memorable day of shooting, driving around, drone flying & shooting the breeze. He wasn’t too excited about “having” to go. This was April 5th & we’ve already been back since. He had a blast both at the ranch, and busting dad’s balls while editing. THAT’S what it’s all about.

I like the "comment" commentary. Lol

I got my new scope on it an headed out on Saturday. What a difference good glass makes! First, I got it printing 2" high at 100 yards, which is about a 225 yard zero with the 125 SST @ 2,860. Then, at 409 yards I just held the 2nd hash mark in the JM-1 reticle (which is supposed to be 400 yards with a 200yd zero with 5.56) and sent 4. There was about 5MPH wind from 10 O'clock and the trap is on the other side of a draw. The bullet is at least 50ft off the ground as it crosses. I was happy to hear the clang, and more importantly, see the hits!

Should be a winner for what I'm doing. Everything out to 250yds is point blank - any magnification, just point and shoot. At 1x, the scope is like a red dot (a VERY bright one). That should cover 95% of why I built this thing. If a further shot opportunity arises, dial it up to 6 and hold. I'm confident out to 400 with it.

I did do some rough tuning after shooting this plate. BIBs shot a little better than the SSTs (no surprise there). The vertical impact centers were the same between the two bullets, which is great. I shot 6 three shot groups at 400 with increasing powder charges. 3 with BIB 118-10s and 3 with the 125 SSTs. BIBs averaged .59 MOA to the SST's .74 MOA. Smallest was a 1.37" with 34.6gr under the BIB. A lot of that is shooter/ optic limitation, though. I was using a IBS 600yard target, trying to hold so the blue was completely obscured by the reticle - far from ideal.

Once I get the permanent can on it, I'll probably revisit some tuning. To do it right, I'll need to mount a high power scope and get a stable shooting platform. That sounds like too much work only to see it change when the suppressor is swapped. For now, I've settled on 34.2gr of 4198 and the 125SST. Need to get out try it on some feral hogs. They are all over our place.
