Muzzle brake on varmint rifles

From research here some guys seem to use MB's on their varmint rifles for helping spot hits and potential misses. Just wondering what brake seems best suited for 223's. I'm tempted on a new barrel, just it needs to have no ports at the bottom as I also shoot prone off a mat occasionally.

Don't do it. Your spotter and fellow shooters will hate you for it. If your 223 is kicking you too much add a couple pounds of weight to the rifle or get a 17fireball

I used them for years on my 223s so I could see hits. Now everything I shoot is suppressed. Yes brakes are loud but good ear protection takes care of that.
I found that just about any brake works, Yes, no ports on bottom. The brake doesn't need to be expensive.

Agreed. Extra weight is the way to go. The blast from a muzzle brake is absolutely ferocious.

I run a Harrell’s brake on everything. Some people are more sensitive than others. A brake doesn’t bother me or those that I shoot with.

Have a 17 pound 220 Swift, no brake. Have a 15 pound 6BR with Brake. Have a 17FB. All recoil about the same. I can see hits with all. The BR is obnoxious. But then, since I can be rather pointedly "uncouth", I don't care if my gun is too.

Snert, you run those light weight rigs

Mine weigh 22-41pounds.

I have bad hearing, brakes just tear me up even with plugs and muffs on. Yeah you will get one side of the truck to yourself AND I won’t go with you again.

Couple of pounds will not do the job you want with a 223. Most any side port muzzle break will work for you.

You and your shooting partners should wear ear plugs and electronic ear muffs, which will do a great job of protecting your hearing and you will hear normally.

I ordered the McMillen hunter class and benchrest stocks with solid fill, only, half way up the forearm and butt stock, filled the rest with a mix of #9 bird shot and casting resin. Hunter class rifle with a 26" MHV contour would weigh 19 lbs, and I still used a muzzle break. The comfort and lack of recoil can not be under estimated in your shooting pleasure.

It is not worth the effort in loading up the truck to go shoot p. dogs if you can't see the hits.

here's my favorite dog gun...20-222......about 17# as shown

Savage target action...Pac Nor full cylinder tube...9 twist

cut down & re chambered from 20BR..barrel length just short of 26"

The dog is flipped & dead even at 500 yds before you feel the recoil tap..

40 grain V max & H322...no brakes for me.....

Why would you need a brake on the 17, 20 or even 224's if the rifle has a little weight, a good stock and sits well on bags and bench ? Recoil is so light you watch the hits, as they are. This is just one of my 20's, and the recoil is like a 22 hornet.
