But back to the question of what I hunted with this year. Shot 4 of my 6 critters with this. Kelbly Atlas Tactical, Krieger 8T 6mm CM.

This time of year Im spending most of my free time tuning up my rifles for elk season. I think we need a good hunting rifle build thread to help guys get ideas. Post up some pictures, specs, targets, loads, and kills!

Here is my new coyote/prairie dog rifle I just picked up at a gun auction. New/never fire 1976 Savage 112 J-series single shot in 220 swift. Got 50gr blitzking molys going 4068 right now.

This guy is one of my coyote getters. I was going to put this one up in the Frankenstein gun thread but never got around to it. It certainly qualifies for that category. Specs are a late 60's 700 action which I trued via the single point thread and bolt sleeve method. The barrel is a Hart .22 caliber 14 twist that I had on a BR gun in 1976. It was an exceptional barrel and I had it in a barrel tube for 40 years waiting for something to do with it. I tapered it from HV taper to a #5 (a major PITA) and chambered it with a JGS .22-250 reamer that is dimensioned for Lapua brass. The stock is a McMillan HTG that I bought from a friend for $50. He had it on a sihouette rifle and it was covered in bondo to raise the comb. Neither one of us had a clue what was under all the body putty. SAS direct thread titanium suppressor. Leupold 4.5x14 with a custom multi dot reticle with dots at 200, 300, 400 and 500 yards. The bullet is a hand made J4 jacketed 52 grain made in my Rorschach dies. I put the skull sticker on the scope so the coyotes know that I'm serous about killing them.

This year I hunted with a Rem 700 6.5-06 rifle weights 10 pounds with a 26" Bartlein 2B barrel, with bipod, rear bag, and scope.

Last year I hunted with a pre 64 Win M70 in 280AI

I think if more guys would try single shot hunting rifles they would really like them!

Alex, can you give us why you like single shot hunting rifles? Easier to built? More precision, less expensive? lighter weights? Safer? Just trying to understand the advantages? I have no experience and trying to learn. Thanks.

I am honestly surprised there isn't more support for single shot hunting rifles.. A lot of people successfully hunt with a Ruger #1 and it is even easier to get another round in a single shot bolt action rifle.

They are not any easier or harder to build, not lighter or safer. Here are the advantages..
Single shot actions are straighter than repeaters as a rule, that equals better lug contact for those that use actions right out of the box.
They feed smoother, when a cartridge makes its way from a magazine to the chamber there will be some side pressure on the bullet. That can loosen neck tension. You also need to be concerned about the bullet tips with Bergers.
They do not limit oal, you can throat the cartridge properly to put the shank of the bullet up the neck.
The magazine cut in the stock does have an effect on the stability of the stock. A single shot will have a little more consistent bedding contact.
They are more versatile. You can run a 6br and 338 lapua out of the same action with only a bolt swap.
Thats just off the top of my head.
I have killed more game with a single shot than a repeater. Long range, shot range, running, ext. It does not limit you like you would think. You have to figure, if you blew the first shot, the second wont be any better, and I bet you can reload a single faster than you think anyhow.

Traditional, BPS or smokeless muzzleloader, you get one shot and have to make it a good one.
