Ideal hunting rifle

Kind of a stupid question...if it was a question? There is no capital letter to start and a question mark to end the comment. Guessing it is a question without any kind of background.

I say a Beeman .17 cal air rifle is the best for hunting squirrel and chipmunk in the back yard. Now for near all big bears, Moose and general big game hunting in Alaska or areas where the big bears abound, I use my Winchester 338 Win Mag rifle. For hunting prairie dog I like the 223 and 22-250 Ackley cartridges in the rifles I own. 30-30 is my favorite cartridge in a few Marlin levers I own for woods hunting. On one I can effectively hit to 300 yards.

Now for deer and antelope in open areas I like everything from my little 6mm Remington 600, 257 Roberts in a 700 Remington Mountain rifle, 6.5 AI's in both Savage and Remington and also have fun with my old '06 pump rifles. Bigger than that, like elk and out comes the 7mm mag in a Winchester I have.

Now there are times when my muzzleloader, 44 mag rifles ... oops ... forgot my 270's. Use them for a variety of hunting scenarios for different game.

Sir - What are you talking about?

I have been told and truly believe, all you need to hunt with in North America is a 22LR, a 12 GA, and a 30-06 and you're covered. But what fun would that be. I own several ultimate hunting rifles. At least they are to me. If I had to own just one for all types and places in North America, I would have a rifle with a good synthetic stock, a #3 barrel or a #4 fluted barrel with a dependable 3x9 or 3.5x10 scope. The caliber would be either 270 Win, 30-06, or a 7 Mag, depending on where and what I would be hunting most of the time. If I was restricted to Texas where I'm from and hunt, absolutely 270 Win.

243/ 6mm on up to big bore,,, there are the do it all rifles and the specific to needs...

The list is endless...

Class 1 to 4 for critters...

And many cartridges over lap in performance in some ways... Splitting frogs hair at times with velocities with in 100 to 200 ft-per seconds...

Yuppers,,, a good old 6.5,,, 7mm,,, 270,,, 30 cal,,, 338,,, 375,,, or a 45... Ha...

Wide feild of view on low power for the thick stuff,,, enough zoom depending on how far you choose to reach out there...

And a weight category of 6 3/4 lbs on up to 16 lbs...

My main hunter class last year was a Remmy SPS sporter in 308 with 3-12 powder... 9 ish'es pounds...

This year is a Remmy BDL in 6.5 A-square with a 3-15 optic at 12 lbs...

I ain't going sheep hunting or 27 miles per day with this unit,,, but I'll still cover some ground I'm sure...

More of a set up in the opening rifle to hunt...

Lawn chair hunting I call it... Ha

I'm not an expert, but I have made three trips to Africa and one to Alaska. Two would do for anything; imho a good 6,5 and my 404 Jeffries. I really like the 6,5x68Shuler. A little more velocity than the 264 WM, and no stinking belt. The 404J is all you would want for DG, ask Remington which cartridge case they used for the RUMs. Add a little insurance for the Big Three, and a bit of romance: a 500Nitro 3" double SxS.

For Northern Wisconsin Whitetails, if you can still see the buckhorn sights: Your Grandpa's 94 Winchester, 32 Special. Gives ya chill bumps. I almost felt he was there, helped me kill a bunch of Whitetails. Can't see the sights anymore, gifted it to my cousin's grandson when he got back from Afghanistan. Still killing deer in Wisconsin.

Bighorn TL3 with multiple barrels
Manners EH1

I have:
7Saum
22Dasher x2
22x47L
6.5 Creedmoor (for sale)

I Want:
45cal Smokless muzzleloader
Something .17-.20cal

Drilling. 16ga/16ga/7x57R birds to to moose and everything in between. Return to zero claw mount, remove the scope and hunt birds and small game handle a lot like a nice sxs birdgun(surprisingly light weight), two slugs up top and 175gr RN under with the low power scope to wade into the trick stuff for the big ones.

Slip on the pre-sighted big scope, load it up with 139gr SPs and your good for the antelope out on the prairie or low light conditions from the deer box. Pull the scope off and stick it in your pocket and hunt small game on the way back to the truck.
