Most accurate caliber out to 2200 yards

My comments were more questioning how the original question was posed. I assume we are discussing an optimal cartridge, not a "caliber" (bullet diameter). I assume we are discussing specifically an ELR cartridge, not something optimal "out to" 2200 yards, (and all the intermediate ranges.) Finally, I was poking fun at the idea what there is some objective way to prove the superiority of a particular ELR cartridge (much the content of this forum would be superfluous if we could.)

- Look at the OP's original post Brian. - The thread kind of "evolved" over time & folks posting. - I don't claim to be an ELR Guru, but I have shot a couple group & score matches, one at 1760 and the E2K event at 2000 yds. - Before one can "speak" with any "wisdom" regarding the topic, I think some real-world experience is a definite requirement. - There is a lot of information on the internet but there is never a replacement for real-world experience IMO. - I believe that the shooter and the ability to read and deal with the conditions have as much to do with the performance and results as anything. - A capable gun is one thing and a "must" for the sport, but shooting and reading conditions are also a requirement. (Gained through experience of shooting at distance under real-world conditions)

Just commenting for the fun of it...

Well first off you don't want a performance level going into the subsonic transition right before 2200Y, which is somewhat dependent on the atmospheres intermingled with altitude. My 30-375R did just that with 230 hybrids at 2930 fps at 8000 DA. It did great before 2000Y and I won a ELR match with it with most targets inside 2000Y. It was a pretty accurate cartridge, but not the best in the wind compared to my 375CT, which was less accurate, but the 375CT was so much better in the wind that at those distances it was way easier to hit stuff, and didn't go trans sonic for about 1000Y yards farther.

IMO, somewhere there is a balance of BC, velocity, and optimal bullet performance, within tolerable recoil restraints of a shoulder fired rifle. It seems that the longer a bullet gets the harder it is to make it fly well??!!, so the only way I can see overcoming length while keeping the BC or bettering it is going up in caliber and thus the weight of the projectile.

My friend and I both got 375CT's at the same time from Lawton. Maybe it was a firing pin spring thing, or load density thing, maybe both combined, but we used to get hangfires with our rifles, even after a lot of experimenting. At some point I think one needs to question how much powder a magnum LRP will efficiently ignite??? In the back of my mind I can't help but think that's why 338AI does so well seeing it burns about 15-20 grains less powder.

Weather is no more "erratic" or "severe" now than in the documented past, by any metric. The world has been gradually warming since the most recent glacial period, and that's fortunate. Earth is currently in the midst of the Quaternary Ice Age, and the current inter-glacial period we're enjoying could just as easily turn back towards a new glacial period as continue warming. Former Obama White House Science Advisor John Holdren stated in 2014:

"While the climate of the Earth has changed over millennia as a result of natural factors — principally changes in the tilt and orientation of the Earth's axis and rotation, and in the shape of its orbit around the sun — those changes occur far too gradually to have noticeable effects over a period of mere decades. In their current phases, moreover, they would be gradually cooling the Earth — taking us to another ice age — if they weren't being more than offset by human-caused warming."

I don't believe humans are warming the planet, but even if we are, I wouldn't want to stop it, even if I was stupid and hubristic enough to think we can possibly deflect the trajectory of the planet's climate.

I am somewhat cautious when someone start espousing their profuse knowledge about climate change on a firearm blog!

I've heard of people doing well with 6.5 Grendel out to a mile.
One person readily comes to mind, but they have a 1.5 mile range out their back door.

All depends on your wind calls.

I would have to agree with the 338 lapua improved for raw accuracy at 2k so far. It has shot the best groups I have seen. But we are going down the .30 road with some 300 Normas and 300 lapua imp's as well. The 30 has a little raw accuracy edge at 1k, but we'll have to see how it plays out at 2k.

Anyone make a .338BR ?
Had a conversation about something similar not too awful
long ago. The context would be to use a 50 Ma Deuce case
shortened to 284 Win length, and necked to the .338.
Put a little efficiency in the boiler room.......maybe !!

Brian, I did a search on temp change over the last 100 years. Several of the scientific sites said 1.4-1.6 degrees over the last 100 years.
The null hypothesis I cited relates to the claim of an anthropogenic cause of any current and future warming. Of course it has been warming since ice sheets covered the northern half of our country about 15,000 years ago. Yet we're still not very warm, relatively speaking, and in fact we are still in the ongoing Quaternary Glaciation, since 2.5 million years ago. We're just in a temporary interglacial period just now, and thank God. So, no, I don't claim it's not warming. But I do claim, and can easily demonstrate, that Earth's climate has never been "stable" and never will be, human hubris and futility notwithstanding.

I'm glad that you clarified that. Being in my hyperglassociatic thermobaric bubble for 79 years made me worry.

A right-handed shooter shooting lefthanded with only 7 fingers shooting a bone stock Savage 112 target 338 lapua in an ARS chassis with no spotter and no wind coach set an ELR World Record at 2158 yards. At that moment the 338 was the round to beat. There might be bigger and better rounds available but the 338 is a proven round that is hard to beat out to 2200 yards.

I think I’d “ borrow “ a US tank . If the barrel burned out…. just get another. If you got caught you would get free room and board for a long time is the only problem.

Without getting into the "Cannon" ELR rifles, the 338 LM or Improved version (even better) is as good as it gets for 2K+. Sure the CheyTac's rock but not needed for out to 2200 yards.

Jaybigboy34 What chambering and rifle did you decide on? And how is it doing/
After shooting out to 2200 yards, I decided that I enjoyed shooting the best at 1 mile. I went with 300 norma mag for that distance. It works well. The 33xc seems to be doing great for allot of people now also.
