Disabled shooters.

So you all know my son can shoot, but in my day I could shoot your pants off. After my second knee surgery my husband gave me his 22 & a brick of ammo to entertain myself. I got to where I could split bottle caps at 250feet. I stopped after my ATV accident. After already having several knee surgeries and a reconstructed ankle I managed to bump my leg off a clutch into the wheelwell of my ATV. Sever tib/fib shattered. During the many surgeries I lost most of the nerve. I now walk in a brace & have that wonderful burning nerve pain. That's why I'm up at 3am posting, feels like I'm on fire down part of my leg. My limp has caused premature loss of almost all the cartlige in my good knee. I'd love to shoot, especially after you all got my juices going again, but dang. I can't stand long, getting down to floor sit may kill me, kneeling would kill me. That doesn't leave much I can do. I'm not wheelchair bound or anything like that. I use my cane for long distance, and in the house John helps me. So any ideas on how to get this old lady shooting again. Maybe show the kid a thing or two wink wink.

Over this side of the world, there's provision for people who can't do prone for medical reason to shoot off a bench brought to the range. Don't know what's possible stateside.

Apart from sitting, the shooter has to comply with the conditions of the discipline.

Here's an example I saw this posted recently over your way at the SW Nationals:

Benchrest. Rifle on bench. shooter on chair or stool. Short range benchrest (sometimes called point blank benchrest) 100yds -300yds smallest average of 5 , 5 shot groups wins or 600-1000yd benchrest smallest group wins. UBC I know nothing about but is catching on like wildfire. Short range score is benchrest that is scored buy the rings on the target (closest to the center).

The guy that started all of interest in getting John a rifle, Butch Lambert can tell you way more than you want to know about Benchrest shooting. There are people that will help just as they are John.

Ebb is right, Paula Marie. Benchrest shooting would be the perfect thing. You have a good talented son to help haul your gear from the car to the bench. All you have to do is sit and shoot. You can use the gun he’s been using too, after he gets his new one.:)

I think "ebb" meant to say Short Range SCORE. Group can be anywhere on tgt.

But yes, lotsa different disciplines that would allow you to get out and have some fun, bring home some fake wood, etc. I chatted w a gentleman who does 200 yd rimfire score and it, like most shooting, sounds like extreme fun.
And I'd appreciate it as well as the other guys, that you'd be mindful about "shooting our pants off". Leave us what little dignity us geezers have left.
;) ;) :)

Another option would be pistol. The club shoots twice weekly, NRA Bullseye (BE) for short. No really special accommodations required. Just roll in and lock'em down - ;). The Prez's wife, Terri shoots regularly.

Thanks ebb. That is happening a lot of late. I don't get the "posted" signal so think I haven't tapped the phone in a likeable manner, so do it again....

I don't know what rifle your son is shooting now but, if its a 22 that may be best because anything centerfire you will need to learn how to reload. If you can find a mentor and want to shoot centerfire I have an old school 6PPC that you are welcome to use till you out grow it. Its no slouch Ive shot a 5 shot group that measured .092 with it. When I say old school it is not a gun that is designed to shoot all your shots when your condition appears, not a runner.

Glad to hear you are not wheelchair bound and your son has interest too.

If there are any ranges near you that have electronic targets so that you wouldn't have to pull pits you could still shoot
Mid Range ( 300 / 500 / 600 yards ) PRONE or even long range using a rifle and a SLING.

Sling shooting makes it more of a Marksmanship Contest and not as much of an equipment race.
Where you and your son have Marksmanship Talent it would be good to put it to use.

Benchrest and F Class will always be there down the road even in the unfortunate event your condition worsens.

With the great success of the Shotmarker Electronic Targets at $799 each more and more clubs and individuals are buying them https://www.autotrickler.com/shotmarker.html

Do you have any clubs near you with 300, 500 600 yards or longer ranges?

Best Wishes,
George

Are you looking to compete or shoot for your own pleasure?

For a long time, competative 3P air rifle and smallbore allowed shoter to lay on a "table", maybe you could do that. I'm sure you could do that for the smallbore prone.

Try shooting hand gun from sitting in a collapsible "beach" or backyard BBQ chair.

I too wear a cane...gave my Uncle Sammy a knee and ankle (opposite sides) 42 and 45 yrs ago. Every day I have only so many steps, then I have to sit down. Plan how to use'm.

Thanks guys. I'm going to see about joining the club John shoots from. It doesn't matter much to me to win contests, I just kinda miss shooting. For a long time each year John & I would shoot a group to see who was better. He passed me up when he was 10. Funny when something bad happens to you its small things you miss.

There is a set of rules governing shooting competition for people with disabilities. You could actually compete at some of the same events as your son would. Go to usashooting.org and in the drop down list under the ABOUT header you will find a section titled Paralympic Shooting. There you will find the information that you need to get started.

This was my last major surgery. It was about 22 inches from behind my knee to almost my ankle to try and graft a nerve. Most painful of all the surgeries
