Bore taper -

I want to take advantage of the choke in my blank. Any harm in chambering the unstamped end?
If a No No, why and how come? ;)

Slug it. Push the slug till about 1/2 inch shy of the muzzle and push it back the other way. Even with only about .0001 of choke you will feel it push a bit easier and about the last inch or two it the slug will feel like it slides right out. Rimfire barrels are a lil different game but on center fires zero choke might be ideal but I’d rather have it a tenth or two tighter at the crown then loose.

Thanks guys. Allow me to try and make my question easier by restating.

Is there any reason, NON choke related, to not chamber from opposite end of bbl stamping on a blank.

I understand choke and believe in the potential benefits of a tenth or two choke at the muzzle.

Best retired toolmaker regards,
Tom

Barrel manufactures suggest doing it the way it's stamped . The lay of the metal could foul faster , esp soft lead . I've tested before on button rifled barrels and it was true . ( I chambered the same barrel on both ends and just flipped it around )
Think of it this way , if it was acceptable Calfee would be sending all those barrels back or cutting them so short .
It'll work , chambering the wrong way , BUT will probably never be as accurate as it could be .

Another consideration , most times the chamber end is more concentric than the muzzle end . Sometimes it's a considerable amount , so much that it can make it to small for receiver threads

Does it go from a right hand twist to a left hand twist? Thought about this so much and so hard I'm completely dizzy:rolleyes:

Riesel,
As an apprentice, I wondered too ... But think of a nut and bolt. There is no top or bottom. Nuttin changes .

Ggmac,
You have addressed my question well.
It was the "grain" re mfrg that prompted my Q. Also, I have a bbl that I have marked as 6 tenths larger on non stamped end.
I had a bbl maker explain some of the ins nd outs of lapping. Even though I've spent more than a few hours on a Sunnen hone, never a barrel bore.
I'll remeasure and if indeed I'm .0006 larger, I may just ask to send it back for a replacement.
