COTTONMOUTH problems

Of course they are not out now where i live, but I always say every spring that i am going to work on the problem and not much happens LOL We live on property that is scattered with small ponds and creeks and when weather heats up they are everywhere!
of course there is a lot of water snakes, but i am wanting to eliminate only the cotton mouths. too many kids that could get bit around the area.

ANY suggestions?

We had the same problem when I was growing up and after a friend of mine got bit, we decided to take the fight to them.

A small army of 12 - 14 year olds armed with single shot shotguns put a big dent in the population.

Yep, go buy yourself a $5000 coon dog.....he will "find" every poisonous snake in the county!!!!! They will even come out of hibernation just to have a crack at biting him!!!!

I remember as a kid playing in the woods n tank trails of Ft Stewart Ga.
When they'd find a pile of breading water moccasins they'd spray diesel fuel on the swarm and lite thier ass' up!
Children's pond had gators too!

Damn things would get in a big ol pile of writhing snakes!

A friend of mine moved to Florida to work on his waterskiing (daily, not just in the summers as here). He said you always kept a loaded shotgun in the boat to clear the waters before you get in to ski each day.

A drift fence and pit trap may help to clear out some. If you check regularly you could remove the snakes you don't want killed.

Small john boat paddle up the creek under the trees in summer. Watch for sleepers in the low hanging branches, like to drop in the boat, shotgun no good.

My uncle said to spread a strip of kerosene to serve as a "fence" to keep them from passing. Maybe corral them inside the ponds that way and then shoot em.

Sounds like a bucket to sit on, and ice chest of beer, a shotgun and lots of ammo kinda days sitting on the edge of ponds shooting em.

We don't have cottonmouths and swampy snake types around here, but some of my favorite places to go still have rattlers. They may keep some of the tourists away, and I'd be sad to see them all disappear. jd

Have visited and hunted all over the south (and west). Knock on wood, I never ran into Mister No-Shoulders...and hope I never will.

have done my share of reading about them and have never seen anything on how to eradicate them other than introducing a lot of hogs.

They will congregate in ponds when hot in summer, walk bank at night a few times when hot and you can really thin them out...I wouldn't worry if you get the water snakes, they will cause you to hurt yourself just the same! Lol you must not have hogs??
