PLEASE READ Annual Message to Members -- Why Upgrades Are Important

Forum Boss

Administrator
As we enter a New Year, I want to take this opportunity to communicate.

This message is directed to all our members. First I want to thank the generous Gold and Silver members who help support the site -- your contributions are vital to sustain the services we provide. About 1400 folks (3% of 43,200) are now Silver or Gold.

Second, I want to encourage those who have not upgraded yet, to consider doing so. If you upgrade to Silver or Gold you can really help the site -- you will be doing something positive and very important.

A Silver membership is just $20 per year -- that works out to just thirty-eight cents ($0.38) per week. A $50 Gold membership is just $0.96 per week. Either way that is very affordable.

What You Get -- Upgraded members get unlimited Classifieds for a full 12 months. How much is that worth? Consider this -- if you were to sell ONE $2000 rifle on Gunbroker you would have to pay $76.25 in fees. That's over 50% more than our Gold membership and you'll pay that for just ONE transaction.

By becoming a Silver or Gold membership you can really help the site -- and make a difference.

Right now only 3% of members have upgraded. If we could raise that number even to 5% it would help us do so much more for our membership -- more field tests, upgrading the Forum software, increasing tech support for all.

REASONS We Need Member Support
1. Forum membership has grown by over 40% in the last three years. As the membership grows, so do our expenses -- for servers, security services, photo hosting, web programming.

2. We do get advertising revenues, but as the Forum grows, membership support is becoming increasingly important. One reason is that virtually ALL the big online ad networks "black-ball" gun-related sites like this. Some very big forces in the internet are working against the firearms community -- that's why member support is vital.

3. We have a skeleton staff. Yet we produce MORE content than an NRA magazine does with multiple Editors and a platoon of freelancers. We release 1000 stories a year in the Bulletin, and dozens of major articles in the main site. If we had substantially more member support we could hire writers to do more important projects and tests, sharing that info with the members.

4. We serve a large, active Forum -- with 43,200 members, the equivalent of a major State University's enrollment (e.g. Penn State is 40,552). But we do all that, and release 1000 stories a year, for less than the annual budget of one kindergarten classroom (salary and overhead). Imagine what we could do with greater funding.

Thanks for the reminder, Forum Boss. I just donated to keep gold membership for another year. YOU are what makes this site one of the best, if not THE best for shooting sports enthusiasts.

Renewed my GOLD after getting alert on 1/1/19. Would have w/o alert but might have taken me a few days to notice my Gold banner’d gone elsewhere.

Keep up the good works you do folks, this ‘site is vastly superior to all the others.

Many members don't realize the expense of traveling to shot show every January. Keep up the good work Paul. Thank you.

Maybe we need another tier in memberships?.?.?. It would give Gold members something to upgrade to... I know it has been talked about in the past. I know and understand that the boss doesn't need anything else to do...... but as an example my Gold membership expires in June. I always give more than the minimum to get a Gold membership. If there was another tier, I could upgrade to that, before June. It's only my opinion, but I think it may generate some revenue.

I upgraded after cancelling a couple magazine subscriptions that had grown stagnant regarding articles and information while becoming bloated with advertising. While I respect the writing team, their articles have become repetitive and self-serving.
It made much more sense to channel that money into a site that concentrates on my interests and stays fluid with constant change and information. Well done! I'll be around for awhile...for good or evil! o_O

Thank for the stepping up to the plate guys -- and showing your commitment.

Part of this comes down to manpower. As the Forum gets bigger and bigger, the demands are increasing on my time, with no end in sight. With increased member support we, hopefully, can hire a "relief pitcher" (to continue the baseball analogy) to handle some key tasks.

For example, over the pass 5 months, I have personally vetted (through background checks) every single new registration. Every one. That has proven effective in blocking potential scammers. But that one task now consumes 200+ hours per year -- that's FIVE 40-hour weeks.

With more membership funding, that task that could be delegated. In addition we can provide more rapid moderation of Forum posts, and also expand the Forum topic list.

In for the Gold.

I moderated for about 5 years on a major forum. Pretty thankless at times, so I gotchyer back.

Thanks!

Thanks Boss for all that you do!

Only 3% of us are contributing members? :( Come on folks, we can do better than that!
Actually, I was rather appalled at donation participation. Where else can you learn so much for so little?
Let's see if we can double that contributing membership by the end of the year. That's only an additional 1400 members. I'll start by signing up one Silver member. Send me a PM.

That, Sir, is a beautiful example of Pay It Forward. I commend you on your style and generosity!

Kinda worse than the government. 3 percent pays for the rest. I think something should be done about that.
Like $5 from everybody. If a dude can't come up with that you shouldn't want him anyway.
