For the “One gun to do it all” guys.

Some recent threads got me to thinking of a way to explain why it doesn’t really work. I’m a carpenter, so I’ll use hammers as an example.
Back when I got started, my father gave me a hammer. It was good for banging nails, but couldn’t do everything. Here’s where I am today.

Sledge hammer/wood splitting maul
Cedar shake roofing hammer
Framing hammer
Trim hammer-tight claw
Trim hammer-straight claw
Ball peen
Upholstery tack hammer
Soft rubber mallet
Copper head hammer
Steel metal shaping
Brass head

Each one is needed to do the job right.

Wouldnt the one with the red shank be considered a rubber mallet?

And this more of a dead blow?

Seriously though, I think you can do it all with a good 6mm. Just a little bit of tweaking here and there and you can do pretty well. Thats what I've tried to do anyways. Though this winters projects are to have dedicated rifles for different types of matches. For the sake of not having to load, shoot, reload that night to shoot the next match the following morning. Though like last year, I will probably only want to show up with whatever barrel is shooting best, and go back into last years routine lol.

EDIT: Though I dont compete in the IBS short range, I do also compete in 200,300,500 "ground hog" matches as my short range game.

Ok Josh I'll bite.
30-06, its killed game and varmints and people in combat on all continents. Also used in competition.
So yeah it's the best all around most versatile with a proven track record.
It's also had a longer life span than any of the magnums, or the benchrest/match rifles of today.
Load it up or down to fit your needs.
Everyone should own at least 1.

Oops. Fixed.

Amphicar was supposed to be the answer to having a boat and car and the el camino was a car/truck. Both of them did neither well.

Exactly! I could see an F-class rifle doubling as a medium-sized game hunting rifle. I could also see a 12-gauge shotgun being used for fowl or large game using different loads. Now, if someone can suggest a single gun that works for F-class, duck hunting, and bear hunting, I will be impressed.

For a carpenter that is an odd assortment of hammers.

I am a framer, been framing since I was 14, now 48.
I have 21 saws, but several are duplicates. Hammers? I have a dozen or so, but 4 or 5 are the same one with varying degrees of wear on the waffle head!

Probably does finish carpentry as well. The amount of damage you can do with a waffle tip framing hammer, trying to drive a finish nail is extraordinary. You can do it in a pinch, but I don't recommend it.

I used Carpenter because it includes all things to do with wood. Thru my career, I’ve done framing, roofing, siding, flooring, finish (trim), built and installed cabinetry, boat building, custom furniture (some upholstery) and now gun stocks.
