Want some opinions

In between customers projects I have been getting pieces together to build myself a 7-300, and for the life of me I cannot decide on a barrel contour!!! I will be using this for west hunting and playing on steel but chances are it won’t see many rounds. Right now I have a bighorn TL3 long action, manners EH1A, Triggertech Diamond, and a brake. But I’m stuck on something like a heavy Palma ( which is what I am used to) or going all in on a carbon proof?? Just seeing what you all thought!? Thanks !

I also have a 7-300 in the works, mainly for long range steel fun. Ended up coming acrossa brux 31” HV profile, and it fits the bill perfectly for me, but might be a little heavy for hunting. I went with a heavy Palma on my 28” 284 and I love it as well. Personally I would want something a little lighter than either of these for hunting, that 284 gets heavy quick! Interested to see where you end up.

A med. Palma contour or a modified Rem. Varmint with an extra 1” on the breech end (which basically makes it the same as a med. Palma) is the best compromise between a sporter and a str. Taper barrel.

If you want to run a sporter contour to take a little more weight out run the #4 bull sporter contour. You won’t have any accuracy issues with it as well or even the #3B contour.

Later, Frank

I have a proof Sendero/EH1/TL3 build nearing completion. It should come in right at 10.5 lbs like the last one, and that’s with a 4-16 ATACR

I am on my second proof carbon barrel they only make a four groove barrel and you will never get more than 1/2 inch MOa out of it I will be going to a Broughton next And do not let me forget to mention they are double the price of a stainless barrel

So 4 groove barrels are not as accurate?

I’ve had better luck with 5r barrels I’ve always heard opposing lands cause more Deformation of the bullet but basically I’ve had better luck with 5r And have tried everything while my proof 4 groove Shoots OK it does not shoot great

Well I hate to argue with you but we all have opinions, take a look at the number of world records that have been shot with four grooves compared to 5 groove

Proof stainless barrels are actually very good cut rifled barrels. On a Br rifle they will shoot with other top cut barrels. Turn them down, wrap them with an insulator (carbon fiber) and they do give up a little accuracy, imo. But for the intended use they serve the purpose. They balance out nice and look good. Buy one because you want one, not because you expect it to shoot better or cool faster than a #3 contour.

Very true no argument there just my preferences and what I have noticed in the two rifles that I have

I am on my second I do love the weight savings and definitely the cool factor on looks just can never seem to get the accuracy I want I’ve tried several powders several bullets then load testing and changing forever I’m going to try a broughton next

Too bad you got what you perceive as not up to par. I have had hands on with 3 proof carbon barrels, all have been exceptional. Not bragging proof up as I've heard the stories too. A couple pics of a proof carbon on a 6 Dasher, it serves the purpose it was built for, banging steel and maybe deer and antelope.

I will start by saying you guys know way more than I when it comes to most of this stuff but a few question comes to mind. Will you be walking, climbing, etc with it? What kind of shape are you in? When I was younger I could walk all day toting a sendero and day pack. I wouldn’t wont to now even if I could. The extra weight can make a big difference in the field.

A friend of mine went on a elk hunt a few years ago out west. He had a 7mm STW in a fairy heavy rig. The guides truck broke down several miles out from camp at dusk. My buddy didn’t want the guide to have to walk alone. He didn’t want to carry the heavy rig either. They struck out no light no fire arm ( maybe no since) and encountered a very ticked off mountain lion. All ended well except for some under garments. I think he took a mountain rifle on the next trip lol.
