Help me pick a 7mm

So I managed to get myself a proof research 7mm blank that's 28 inches long. I have a savage LRP I've been shooting and gonna have this spun up as a switch barrel rifle now that I have 2 tubes. I dont mind getting a second bolt face. Its primary use will be hunting but I may break it out for a PRS match or two.

Ive narrowed it down to 2 cartridges (if you got something else let he hear it)

7mm-08 AI

And 7mm SAUM

From my understanding the 284 doesn't fit well in a SA? Maybe I'm wrong? Id like to be able to run the 162GR bullets or a little heavier.

The 284 with the right freebore (i.e. s very short one) will work with 162s in a short action. I have a buddy that shoots one with 168 bergers and it absolutely hammers; a half moa out to 1k. A long action does give you more options though.

Something for you to think about. For hunting and prs you will need to feed from a magazine. I'm not familiar with the lrp. Is it a blind magazine? What is it already chambered for? A saum case probably will not feed, if the mag is set up for a narrower case.

Its Running AICS mags in its current set up. And its currently Chambered for 260 AI. Eventually itll have a 223AI tube and something elses to round it out,

Id do a 7mm08ai... why not? 7-08 is under rated imo. It can be out performed in competition, but hunting, steel, etc, its a great round.

Do this, save yourself from a headache. I owned an excellent shooting 7saum. I got rid of it simply because brass was so hard to get. Also with the bullets offered today it is better suited for a long action.

Could go 7SS (Sherman Short). Rich has head stamped 6.5 brass available now that could be necked up. Guys are getting impressive numbers out of his SS design. I have the long action version 6.5 SHERMAN and it is very efficient! Use 270 brass as a parent case. With a stout charge of N570 out of a 28" HART and a 140 Berger it runs 3339 fps. I believe he has a website up and running now, If you are interested try googling Sherman wildcats, I think is what he calls it. He is very good to deal with and answer questions. Also will rent you a reamer and sell you dies.

Best of luck with finding 7saum brass.
I have 2- 7 SAUMs, Nosler brass just plain sucks! Remington Brass is much better, but near impossible to find. I,m trying the Norma 300 SAUM brass necked down now. time will tell

7mm SAW from West Texas Ordnance, they’ll rent a reamer.

Or 7-08 ackley.

I’d want to shoot a 180 ELD or Hybrid, so saving some mag length will help a lot.

So, I'd like to stay away from wildcats. As far as Im willing to go is AI. I dont like getting stuck with something from one source and then be shit out of luck couple years down the road cause I can get brass or anything I need.

So Far I've narrowed it down to 7mm-08AI and 7mm SAUM. 284 Seems like a LA Cartridge trying to be shoved into a SA.

I can neck down Alpha munitions 308 brass for the 7-08

and 7 saum brass..... Well that's a mystery.

What’s wrong with the 260ai for hunting and the occasional PRS match? Seems like the perfect combination all in one chambering.

Nothing. But I got a killer deal on this 7mm blank so might as well use it. Also 7 mm bullets have better BC's than the 6.5 bullets. And a 162 would have a little bit better knock down power than a 140.
