Federal making a significant chemical change to primers

The article mentions all new ammunition will have the new primers, but nothing about hand loading market. Will those continue to be made using old formula?

Want to explain the errors?
Speaking of errors I did not see any claim of 2 separate primer lines.
I currently have no opinion about the change since I have not used any of the primers.....and don't expect them on the market for hand loading at least for a while..

That article is so filled with technical errors, that it is not fit for bird cage liner.

Federal will NOT make two separate primer lines - when the conversion is done, then you get the new stuff, and that's it.

I will go someplace else for primers.

As a user of some of the more recently developed powders such as VV High Energy powders and powders with CFE additives, I look forward to opportunity of benefiting from the application of 21st century chemistry to primers.

There have been other lead-free primers on the market for decades, but they weren’t viewed as reliable enough for duty ammunition and have been relegated to use in training ammo.

While eliminating lead was a primary requirement of the project, Federal ended up creating a primer that wasn’t just the equivalent of the current lead styphnate mixtures, but one the company says is significantly superior to the older technology.

“It is safer to manufacture, and it’s affordable and reliable,” says Drew Goodlin, senior director of technology at Vista Outdoor, the company that owns Federal Ammunition.

One way in which Catalyst improves on current primer technology is that it is more compatible with modern propellants, meaning that it won’t degrade the powder it comes in contact with the way some current primers can. Even better, the Catalyst formula propels more hot, heavy metals, while producing less pressure from gases, into the propellent bed than any other primer system Federal has used—even its vaunted Gold Metal primers.

The aluminum performs two main functions. It makes the explosive nitrocellulose more sensitive, and it helps heat up the bismuth. The “oxide” in bismuth oxide adds oxygen to the reaction, while the remaining 10 percent is a blend of fuels, binders, and sensitizers.

A new primer compound that doesnt need chemicals from other countries, may be a good thing. http://www.alu.army.mil/alog/issues/sepoct10/spectrum_smallarms_ammo.html

The chart below identifies the primer mix chemicals, the suppliers to ATK, and the country of origin. All 13 chemicals for primer mix are formulated by U.S.-based commercial companies, but 10 chemicals have origins outside of the United States. Of these 10 identified chemicals, 4 have origins solely in China, 2 others are only found in Mexico, and 1 is only found in Brazil. Three other chemicals share origins among the United States, European countries, India, China, and Mexico.

Reade Manufacturing is a grinder. They purchase the material (ingot, billet, or powder) from Canada, China, and Russia. The lowest bid usually gets the contract.

I know nothing about this but it's inconceivable to me that Federal would make changes to their primer that would adversely affect their performance but I guess anything is possible today, i.e. Hoppe's new patches that come apart into threads when placed over a jag.

Could you explain the errors for us less knowledgeable folks?

Thanks.

Nitrocellulose is not an explosive, it is an oxygen rich deflagrant - it cannot be made to explode.
PETN is not s "Fuel" it is an ultra-explosive,, in the same family as TNT, Nitroglycerine, RDX. Propagation speed is 25,000 feet per second.
Aluminum does not increase the sensitivity of explosives - it lengthens the heat curve.
Normal primers (I can't speak for the new Federal) do not take 1.5 thousands of a second to "burn"...they burn 20 to 40 times faster.
That is just the beginning.
This is the typical press release written by the PR department who know nothing about firearms, or cartridges... they worked in the sneaker industry last year.

I wonder if the guys back when mercuric primers were dropped shook their heads in disbelief or howled at the moon for the change.
I also wonder if the guys back when corrosive primers were changed to lead styphinate that they also shook their heads in disbelief.

I am happy to have a different chemical compound that is SAFE and has NO side effects like in the past.

I was using corrosive primers in my 6.5x55 Swede in the 80’s without knowing it. I knew when my barrel would rust after using the Swedish made match ammo. The smell after the shot should have told me, but I paid no attention.
Rotten eggs was the smell.

Bring on these new primer compounds, I say.

Cheers.
:D
