Recommondations for Oregon Retirement Location

have you thought of portland area- been 20 years since i lived there but big city amenities- OHSU- and can be in a rural area pretty quick. also rifle club in damascus i think. i loved oregon but now id be careful about moving there. they are proposing some extreme gun laws

I grew up in Pennsylvania and would love to move back but my property tax bill would quadruple, I would pay six percent sales tax on just about everything, and I would be paying to support millions of do-nothings in Philly and a dozen other cities. On top of that, the opiod crisis has hit the rural areas with a large increase in burglaries and other property crimes. (Dopers kicked in the back door of our hunting cabin to steal three boxes of 35 Remington ammo). No thanks.
I would advise the OP to RENT for a year in the desired place before buying. Many a person got a rude awakening being away from family and friends.

We don't have many shooting ranges -- we just go shooting. Things are generally economically depressed, but if you have a stable retirement income, or previously acquired wealth you can live like a king.

When it comes to being near medical facilities, there isn't much difference these days between twenty and a hundred miles.

There is a range in Vale in the East. On private land but they run both XC and Mid/Long Range events as well.
Also, on the tax front, Oregon deducts Federal taxes from Oregon income. There is no sales tax.

New leadership @ your state legislature,govenor and county level. Like many states that are dealing with a STD.

We don't need no Libs in our Texas Government. I am voting on the same folks that are in power now.

It was our plans to do the same, or more my wife's plan, Seaside, Coos Bay area. Thanks to her and her sister spending 10+ days out there each year for the past 20 years it has subsided, and Milo is happy.
The thought of going into to Portland monthly or bi monthly would raise my blood pressures. The only plus ever in my head was getting back into walleye fishing on the Columbia river.

"hobby". I'd be one of em. Keep the locations ideas coming, good, bad and ugly, and honest.

We are not interested in areas outside of Oregon. But I appreciate your efforts.
Our first thoughts were the coast as we live the beauty and temperate climate as neither of us can handle high temps. But the coast is depressed, with little to offer in real estate inventory.
We had thought of Southern Oregon, but finding similar situation or excessive growth and crime. Something that concerns us as the overgrowth will continue, which draws the unsavory there as well. A big concern as we have had enough from California and Washington in tbe ateas we have lived.
Portland is way to large for us. Again, looking for something not lsrger than 20k, or their abouts.
Had not thought about Eastern Oregon. Very concerned about the heat and distance from the ocean. Maybe need to look.
Appreciate your input, please continue to educate us.

I'd love to be able to afford to live in Oregon.

Same thing happen'n here in Texas. R.E. is going through the roof, along with my property taxes. OUCH!

A lot of Oregon towns are trapped by environmental laws as far as new development. If the population grows past 10,000, the town has to spend billions on new infrastructure. So development is very limited, which of course limits availability and drives prices up.

For "some Federal employees" it's popular to claim an address in TX to avoid payroll taxes. I can't state exact figures here in Oregon but it feels about 60 percent is state tax and 75+ percent of the population is on food stamps or other subsidies. I can't wait to get out of here.

it sounds like youve talked yourself out of the whole state. there are no perfect places to live.
