Krieger 20 cal Barrel

Who has used a Krieger 20 caliber barrel? I have a Rem varmint contour 12 twist 6 groove on its way. Maybe build a 20 tac or another 20 Vartarg?

I have a Krieger chambered in 20 Practical , 1-10. It shoots itty bitty groups and cleans up well. I doubt you will be disappointed.

Bowfisher, what are the specs of the rest of that rifle? Very nice. I'm wanting to build something similar in 20 VT.

Otter, I picked this barreled action up unfired from a guy. It was chambered by Eddie Harren, trued Rem 700 action, Shilen 2oz trigger in a Bobby Hart stock.

It's what I call a mid-weight barrel, fluted...I have a Clearidge 6x20 on it. I shoot 39SBK's and H4198 at approx 3800fps.

BTW, viewing through my borescope , this rig has a (from my limited viewing experience) perfect throat , excellent chambering job, IMO. DocEd did a great job on it. Also, it's not picky, it will sling anything from 32's to 40's and stack them all into little piles.

I was on the verge of building a custom. BAT SV action, Jewell, hunter class BR stock, Krieger Rem contour barrel...at the last I back out because I really wanted a LV or HV barrel and none were available. I also wasn't sure I wanted to invest that much money in a custom rig in 20 VT. End up with a Cooper instead. Have no regrets about the Cooper. But I'm so thrilled with the caliber I'm going to order a custom 20VT to go with the Cooper.

I have some property I can shoot out to 300 yards, but the noise bothers the neighbors. I'm considering dropping my gun range membership and investing that money into some quality sound suppressors. A suppressed 20VT shouldn't be much louder than a pellet gun.

While pretty quiet, I would say it's closer to a HV 22 long rifle. The bullet breaking the sound barrier makes a lot of noise. A 300 Blackout subsonic on the other hand is very quiet.

I bought two Krieger 1-8tw barrels for my 20-250 because I didn't figure it'll be long for barrel life and I have to admit, seeing that unchambered .20 cal barrel just sitting there is oh soooo tempting to turn it into a 20 Practical and I just happen to have a Rem VSSF .223 that hasn't seen the light of day in some time and it would make a great 20 Prac build. If that spare Krieger barrel was something like a 1-11tw it'd probably already be at the gunsmiths.

I considered several .20's, went with the Practical. Bunches of fun to shoot and so easy to make. 11 twist 40 gr Horn. 3750fps.

I used 24.2 grs. of H-335. CCI SRP BR pushing a 40 gr Vmax. This were fired in a 28" barrel. H-322 also shot great. I went with H-335 because it was more readily available.

Reading the various posts on the 20 calibers has been inspiring. - To the point to where I've committed to building one.
I'm getting my parts together now & a member of the forum here has also reached out & helped me.
I have a Borden Model BR action on order, 2 Krieger barrels (1-11 & 1-10 twists in No. 10 contour stainless).
My plans are to have the 1-11" twist chambered in 20 VarTarg Turbo & use Lapua 222 brass & the 1-10" twist be chambered in 20 Tactical using Lapua 223 brass.

One question that I have for those here in the forum with experience is if Neck-Turning is worth the effort or if a No Turn chamber is yielding top accuracy. - As I stated, I plan to use Lapua Brass, but I'm looking for top accuracy & I don't mind turning brass as I'd only need to get the additional mandrels. - And of course I plan to use top quality dies in the reloading process.

Thanks Guys, - Ron -
