what brand of marker for bullet coloring

Make sure you buy the Sharpies that are PERMANENT MARKERS and not "hi-liters." I use red, blue and green and only red and green when using the IBS target because of the blue ring. Good luck!

Can this be done several days ahead of time, or is it best right before shooting? I've never tried it early, but would be nice as it's one less thing to forget.

Ahead of time is fine. You want it to have at least a few minutes to dry on there properly anyway.

You may need to bring the target home and take some cotton q-tips dipped in rubbing alcohol to make the colors really 'show', particularly if you're doing a larger ladder and have to use some of the less contrasting colors i.e. yellow, orange, and/or combinations i.e. red/green, yellow/blue.
