.17 Remington Pet Loads

I have two 17 Remingtons that I shoot Todd Kindler's 30 grain Gold Bullets with IMR 4007SSC Powder. Both guns are stock Remington 700's with only Rifle Basix triggers added. I'm getting 3700fps (3/8" groups @ 100-yds) with the 700 Classic and 3670fps (1/4" groups @ 100-yds) with the 700 BDL. Tested on 75 & 80 degree days with no pressure problems.... It's just a GREAT load for the 17 Remington....

It appears the 17 Rem certainly isn't powder sensitive, because in nearly every reply, someone uses a different powder with good success.

Cooper 21 MTV fluted barrel. H414 is the only powder I have ever used. 25gr Hornady was the go to bullet, they got are to find, moved to 25gr Bergers. Had to increase the powder alittle on the Bergers, Its my go to gun. PD to whatever. Vortex Viper 6-20x44 PA scope.

Wouldn't be without a .17 Remington! Best powders I've used are AA2700 and CFE223. Only use the CFE223 anymore. Top velocities and minimal copper fouling.

I've been wanting to try the CFE 223 and the IMR 4166

I haven't had a chance to play with my CZ 527 17 Rem yet so I don't really know, but for those of you that have, is powder fouling more the issue or is copper fouling the problem? Reason I ask, is everyone seems to clean these things, about, every 20-30 rounds to keep accuracy level up.

I've been wanting to try the CFE 223 and the IMR 4166

Give the CFE223 a try. No experience with IMR 4166. Like with any powder in this small case/diameter range, pressure can climb rapidly with minimal changes in weight. Please start low and work up. With the 20-grain VMAX I found listed maximum loads to be too warm in my rifles (both Remington 700s) with 26.5 grains proving the most accurate while still shooting flat and explosive.

When I had my 17 rem. it had a Pac-nor custom barrel 26 inch length. I found that I could shoot close to 100 rounds without cleaning and still have minute of prairie rat accuracy. I do think that different barrels and makes of rifle along with powder and bullet combo's could change the cleaning for accuracy amount in the 17 remington. I would find a good load for your rifle then just go out and shoot it to find out when your accuracy falls off....then just clean it right there in the field and your good to go again.. When I did have my 17 rem. it was like shooting a lazer. With my 4165 fps. velocity my longest kill on a sage rat was 538 yards on a windless morning. Hard to believe a tiny 25 grain bullet could be so accurate and kill at that distance. My old 17 rem. is now a 20 practical but I often think about getting another 17 remington for fun.The 17 rem can be finicky to find a load for as there are many powders to choose from but knowing what I have learned right here on this site from many shooters here and OCW testing I do think it would be a lot easier to find an accurate load very quickly.

I think much of that is due to a carry-over from the days of dirty powders and limited bullet choices. Especially with CFE223, I have shot far more than 30 rounds without extensive cleaning with no problems. Powder fouling (What little there is) is handled by an occasional dry nylon brush followed by a dry patch. I don't worry about copper fouling until accuracy drops off, and then I do a full clean.

Unfortunately, I have never logged a specific number of rounds before needing such cleaning, but 20-30 isn't even a consideration in my rifles.

I bought a CZ527, it was used with supposedly 750 rounds down it. It fouled pretty bad, coppered up, and didn't shoot well anyway. Unfortunately the accuracy degraded during load work to the point I gave up so I had it rebarreled.

With the new premium barrel it shot well, cleaned up easy and fouled little. I'd clean it after a 50 bin, just because.

Had two other 17R's. A M700V that I also bought used, it fouled pretty fast and needing cleaning often. Back then I cleaned it every time I got home from shooting.

Had a Bullberry 15" Contender barrel. It didn't foul or copper up very much but I still cleaned it when I got home.

Doesn’t sound like people are coating bullets for the 17 Rem. To keep them from fowling so fast.

My CZ527Varmint has only been loaded with H4895 Berger 25gr. Target bullets, BR 4 , and Remington brass.
NOSLER brass couldnt handle the same pressure as Remington
Very accurate powder !

30 grain Montana Gold over 24.5 grains W760.



So cool watching those tiny bullets hit the target.

Count me in as another 17 Remington fan. Have not seen it listed rest but I like IMR4320, with 30 grain Berger and Kinder bullets. Back when the barrel was good it shot the best groups I have ever fired (repeatedly in the high zeros). My load was hot and lead to short case life. But with accuracy like that, I did not care.

Results were not what I was after at all. 1 to 1.5" groups at 100 and I found pressure much faster than I thought I would. So back to the drawing board. I will try and find some CFE223 this weekend.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the CFE223. Just make sure to start low and work up. I find that best accuracy in my rifles comes about a grain less than listed maximum without giving up an appreciable amount of velocity. After all, any bullet moving at 4,000+ feet per second isn't really going to miss those extra 100-150 fps maximum loads offer and with less pressure and wear!

I really like to shoot crows with a small caliber rifle.It is fun watching them drop to the ground.The last one I shot was with my 17 Predator and a 30 Gold/X-Terminator powder.I really like H-414/W760 in the 17Rem.Was just thinking about all the good powders listed so far that work very well in the 17Rem.Just thinking maybe I should try X-Terminator in the smaller 17Rem. case and see if that works as good as it does in the 17Predator.
