Updated Barrel life Excel file

Grimstod

Machinist, Designer, and Shooter.
So the excel file on the accurate shooter website is really outdated now. I though I would make some updates to it. Especially the Powder Burn Temperature rates. They are now listed in a second tab. Please take a look at it and run some numbers of your own and give me some feedback. I would like to improve and update it even more. Also if you see any missing powders let me know.

I am looking at the excel file at work and the second tab where all the newer powder heat potentials are listed and it does not show. Granted its a free excel program and not the paid version that I have at home. Is anyone else having issues seeing both tabs?

I don't see the second tab also. Additionally, the comments box for the burn rates is not large enough for all the listings and won't allow scrolling. Was looking for Varget and if it is there, it is down in the list and out of sight.

Would love to be able to use this tool. Thanks for making the effort.

Sure thing papa charlie. Ill have to look at whats up with it when I get home. This is a very useful tool. Varget is one of the hotter powders with a KJ/Kg of 4040

Cool that works. what is Bore Capacity Grain mean? Also I assume the Shot Rate is how frequently you fire. For example, in F-Class you have 22 minutes to fire 2 sight rounds and 20 score rounds.

Thank you. Very cool calculator. Does bullet weight have any impact on this or is it figured into the Pressure value that is derived from the bullet weight and powder load.

Bullet weight is figured into the pressure value. I have an article on my website about it but It still needs some editing. The Bore Capacity is derived from the caliber that you put in. Its just generated automatically. When I copied the old barrel life calculator into a new document it showed up. I may hide it again but if its useful info I wont.

The flame temperature of Rl 33 is 3900. I will put that in the excel file in the morning.

You're discussing some kind of butchered antique of the barrel life spreadsheet.
If anyone would like a real & newer version(like 10+yrs newer) just PM me.
By the way, I wrote the original.

Ok, seemed to work. I'll try to steer folks back here for it.
It's stored condition represents competitive 6PPC use. The 'extending adjustment' is for that found through the use of things like melonite treatment, or moly (if anyone still uses it). Has shot rate adjustment from default recommended rate.

Keep in mind this is ACCURATE barrel life.
That's not a point where bullets no longer exit the muzzle on trigger pulls!
And you won't notice with any precision the point of step change from accurate -unless you held best accuracy to begin with. With that, I'm sure these numbers are right

Thanks Mike. I had written an article on my website talking about using the old one. I will have to totally rewrite it. Not complaining though. This is much better. Admins have you seen this? Good Bulletin post material here.

One more question Mike, do you have the powder burn temperatures for the new RL23 and 26? I see there was a bulletin post on those two powders recently.

mike thanks for the file, just a question for you I put up a post about this a while back and no one had the answer. H4350 heat potential in your powder listed as 3760kj some sources show it as 3990kj any ideas on which is correct as it makes a big difference in predicted barrel life and also being a very popular powder.

There is no keeping up with all the powders merchandised from week to week.
As far as I know, none of them provide any real information about their products, so that we could.

My numbers came from a QuickLoad powder file, and I do not have the very latest on this laptop.
3990 is very hot for H4350. Unless in QuickLoad (tested) I wouldn't believe it.

Perhaps someone with the very latest of QL could post it's powder file here (text file).
