Switching Primers in Palma Brass

Based on several recommendations I am planning on trying a switch from GM205 to CCI450 in my F-TR rifle to hopefully reduce ES/SD.

Was just wondering if others had done the same, and what differences, if any, the change had on their charge weights. I'm hoping to be able to reduce the amount of time I need to develop a load, as I have some other things going on this summer. :)

Thanks in advance for the input!

Scott

I had better results from CCI BR-4 Small rifle primers than 450 magnum primers with Varget powder in 308 with 200 gr Berger Hybrid long throat chamber for F-tr. CCI BR-4 and Fed GM205 had the same node with same charge weight. Never did find any node with 450 primers, just random shots in the ladder test. 450's may work better with other powders. The only way to know what works best in your rifle is to test it.
What works for others may not work for you.
Good luck.

Your results may vary.

What are your SD's now? I'm get about 6-8fps out of 205's, varget and Juggernauts, and I don't do anything special. I turn necks, but that's it.

SDs with this load (Palma brass, GM205, Varget, 200 Jack) were around 10 last time I tested. It shot reasonably well, but probably could use some fine tuning. I'm not committed to switching at this point, but I value the opinions of the folks that recommended it enough to try it. Have a few loads set up to test today -0.2gr, 0.0gr, and +0.2gr from my current load; hopefully that will tell me something.

I have had my best ES/SD/accuracy numbers with Russian primers. I know they are not available these days and my loads with Fed. and CCI match primers were not quite as good. Looking at S&B and other European primer sources next as I will be out at the end of this season.

Thanks all! Had a chance to do some testing today and was pleasantly surprised that the FGMM loads shot much better in the cooler temps than what I had last year. Will have to play with charge weight/seating depth once it warms up a bit.

On a separate and unrelated note if anybody is looking for 2000 CCI 450s I might know a guy. ;)

Cheers,

Nope, never heard of Bingo primers. I've heard of Bingo fuel, when you have just enough fuel to return to a base or carrier. Is bingo primer one that has just enough flame to singe the powder?

Yeah, that's right. Just enough to singe the powder and send the bullet sailing into the X ring........:p:D

The Blackout Bingo Primers will put 'em all in the X-ring! Kinda hard to come by but Shawn B was shooting them at Palo Alto last October;). You were there Jade:D.

Did some testing on primers Sunday with Lab Radar lowest ES was fed gold match
ES Was 5
Rem 7/12,BR4,& 450 Mag were higher may not mean much as I was shooting 223 Rem 308 win could be different

I believe neck tension and hardness of brass come into play as well. Annealing can improve neck tension for consistent releases. It also can seal up chamber for consistent velocity. Some cartridges are more susceptible to this then others. Matt
Annealing brass is more about the case sealing then neck tension the way I load .
My way of loading I use Half of the neck to center the case and the other half for bullet hold but I also don't jam .
Keeping ES as low as possible Larry
