Starting in 7MM - Straight 284 or Shehane

.284 Shehane is what I shoot. The brass prep is exactly the same, and I fireform all my brass regardless, so I rather have the extra case capacity. If I decide to shoot slow as the .284 Win, the side effect is lower pressures and longer brass life. If I decide to run at same pressure levels, the side effect is 75-100 fps faster.

After four 284 Shehane barrels with .313nks and .225fb..I decided to make the switch to the straight 284 with a .319nk and .230fb because I'm lazy and wanted to shoot more and do less brass prep. And that is where my problems began.

With my Shehane barrels with the .313nks and Norma brass. I obviously had to turn necks,,, neck tension and seating pressure's were very easy to control. In the straight 284 with a .319nk and Norma brass with UNTURNED NECKS not so much. That Norma brass is great but the dang necks are thick and hard to control without turning IMO. And yes I anneal after every firing.

If I gotta do the same amount of work (other than fire forming which shoot great at mid range) I may as well stick with the Shehane.

Like Erik said,,,I can run a pud load and save brass or I can stomp on it and get extra velocity. When you call wind no better than I do that little extra velocity MIGHT be the difference between a nine or a ten.IMHO.

All that said .....

Straight .284.

Kind of hard to argue with this. His accomplishments speaks for itself.

In all 3 of my Shehanes I could not get the accuracy nor the e.s.'s down to acceptable levels unless and until I hit 2885f.p.s. The best loads I had were running 2910, in that vicinity. They were accurate and did well at any distance, from 300 to 1000 yards. However, I never got more than 4 firings out of brass at those levels. Primer pockets are the weakest link in those cases and at 2900+ they did not last long! I grew weary of prepping brass all the time and fireforming them! I went to a straight .284 and all my brass problems disappeared, running 2830! I am NOT a great 1000 yard F-Open shot, and I did not notice any difference in my scores from a straight .284 to a Shehane.

Ben, I agree!! From what little I know about both, if you run the upper nodes on either primer pockets will leave out PDQ. That rebated rim seems to be the Achilles heel.o_O

I have the same specs as kieth Glassrock. Works for me. If you want to go faster it is time for a magnum. Build a straight .284 and learn to read wind. Really is no magic bullet or case. The less screwing around you have in the loading room the better. The greatest gun on the line will lose every time to the best wind reader with a good gun.

Wow Bob actually made sense for once. I know many shooters using .315 neck and .220 freebore. I've been running .317 and .205, because I don't have my own reamer. I plan to order my own this year, and am thinking .315 and .225.

That .225 freebore is excellent.. I have a .313 neck and it forces you to turn the necks down to 12 thousandths thickness. I have found that once you anneal a 12K neck wall, bullets seat as smooth as butter. I turn ALL my cartridge necks to 12K... Makes life "smooth as silk".. LOL!!

I also do a light turn on all my .284 brass, mine is a .317 neck, .225fb, my gun likes that extra clearance in the neck area, I also have great seating success.

If you are shooting at Rattlesnake, you are shooting with 3 of the most anal and accurate guns that I witnessed at 2017 BSN. "When in Rome" I would listen to Keith et al. Just sayin

Seems like I'm at the right place to ask a few questions. Just built a straight 284 on a Borden BR action, with 28" Krieger. Where would you recommend starting my ladders with H-4350 & H-4831sc, and what kind of velocities can I expect? I'll be using CCI-Br2's. After a decent node is found, I'll tweak seating depth, primers and neck tension. This is my first go round with the .284 and it will be shot in 1K yd. benchrest. I don't think anyone where I shoot is currently shooting one. Oh yeah, it has a .315 nk and bras is turned for .003 chamber clearance. Thanks in advance for any advice.

.003 neck clearance is a little tight. Most 284's like .004-6 thousand. Using H-4831sc I'd start at 53 grs and work up pushing Berger 180 Hybrids.
Thanks jr600yd, Should have said a .315 Nk with necks turned to give me .003 clearance. Loaded round mikes .312 across the neck. I can always return if I feel they need more but once it's gone, it's gone. Looking forward to trying this cartridge, do you think it can be competitive in 1000yd BR?

I think is has been done before, at Deep Creek i think. @tom said he didn’t know a .284 could shoot so good.

^^^^^^^ this is spot on in my experiance^^^^^^^^^

Thanks for your input, this is just an experiment. I understand that the accuracy requirements are different for F-Class however most of the shooters that I know that compete in this discipline are as anal about accuracy as I am and have done some incredible shooting with this cartridge, so I though it was worth a try. At least it will satisfy my curiosity.
