Scales

When I gave up on my Gempro, I switched to using an old Ohaus 1010 that I picked up at a gun show for $30. My scores instantly went up. A lot of shooters use a charge master set to throw close, then trickle up on a higher end scale. I throw charges with a couple powder throws to within 1-2 tenths, then add kernels with a long light tweezer on my balance beam. It's really not much slower, and accurate.
OK thanks for your info....

What was the reason on giving up on the gempro ?

Inconsistent and constant resetting the thing. I wouldn't recommend one to anybody. Either spend a lot more money for a good electronic or get a good balance beam scale.
Just wondering... did you have it hook up on a ups system .... sometimes power surges could of been some of your problem... just wondering because the lyman worked better on that system.

I have gone exclusively to a tuned, beam system that incorporates a leveled to the mark video feed through my computer. I never did find an electronic scale that I had 100% confidence in. The GemPro250 was my last effort at that and it was OK, but slowed me down and my confidence was near zero given the same charge might weigh differently each time I put it on the scale. Then my power adapter went out and I never used it again.

What excalty do you mean by a beam system that incorporates a leveled to the me know video feed through your computer? I have no idea what that is .. ... thanks .

Just because a digital has more digits of display, e.g. .02gr, doesn't mean its better. I recently bought one. Weighing a 55gr bullet back to back 20 times gave about a .1 range, which is not as good as my beam (looking at the grads on the level indicator). One should always evaluate the repeatability in some manner to understand what really constitutes a true difference.

Is there a video on tuning a beam scale ? ....thanks for your post .....

If you mount a computer camera looking at the needle, you can watch the movement on a computer screen. That way the position is always the same. You don't have to keep bending over to look at it, and most likely from varied position with your eyes. It allows you to keep the scale down on the table in front of you, so that you can more appropriately watch the pan while adding kernels.

Here's one more little story about the consistency of a balance beam. This fall while I was shooting on the E targets at F-class nationals. The target system gives an on target velocity. I know that they're not perfectly accurate, but I would think that it would make the read out a little worse than reading muzzle velocity consistency. After I finished shooting my 20 shot string, my scorekeeper commented "Holy Sh**, you have an SD of 6!" I know that my Gempro could never come close to that consistency.

Wow that's good ... did Scott tune your scale ?

Not yet. It's just the way I found it at a gun show. In the original 40 year old box, that has yellowed with age.
OK well good for you ..... I need to get something better I emailed scoot to see if he ships to Canada never heard back yet
....but I hope he does I hear he does a fantastic job on the scales.... thanks for all the information I really appreciate that.

What type did you get done ?
i bought a Ohaus 10-0-5 (Or was is it a 10-0-5?).. either way.. (well actually my daughter bought it for me with my funds and shipped to him), the last time i talked to him, he said that the box was there.. i forget how long ago that was now.. but it has been quite a while now.
