Scoville vs Lowboy for F-Open (7RSAUM)

Please allow me your input on selecting a new stock.

I intend to use it for F-open on my 7mm RSAUM. A barnard action and 30" barrel will be ontop of it.

Benchrest stocks: I like the idea of little to no shooter influence on the rifle, except of pinning it in the shoulder to absorb recoil. It will have to be weighted to correct the ballance and adjustable length of pull hardware for comfort.

Lowboy FClass: Less strain on your neck due to cheek weld. More weight to ride the bags. More shooter influence to repeat.

I see a trend towards benchrest stocks. But shooting it on a magnum caliber concerns me.

The BEST stock I have is an old, as in not made anymore, Robertson stock. I bought it from Alex Wheeler. It tracks beautifully and the butt metal is easy to operate. However, you can't get them anymore. The next best stock I have is a Shehane Tracker. It is flawless in tracking and the wood laminate is gorgeous. I have a PR&T "Low-Boy" and it is an excellent stock>>>but I recommend trimming 2" off the front end>>>>it is just TOOOOOO long! I take a 36" long sleeved shirts and I could not reach to adjust my NEO! Those 2 knobs on the rest were a solid 2" out of my reach. I cut those 2" off and it turned into a fabulous stock! There are many others out there. I think it comes down to a "personal preference" matter.

Ben, X-Ring Rifle Stocks makes a Robertson pattern stock. I have one and it does track great.

When it comes to a stock, you need to look at the two bag riding surfaces, their angles and distance frome the bore and each other. That is the stock. Most everything else is cosmetic. The greater the distance the bore is from the front bag riding surface the more possitive compensation, but also the more torquing the rifle will have. The exact opposite is the case with the rear bag surface. If the surfaces are parallel the stock will track better, if there is drop in these surfaces, either in the rear like an MBR or front and rear like a st-1000 the rifle will recoil harder. The human interface features like grip and cheek are purely personal preference. But very few Br shooters hold the rifle much, for good reason. In F-open there is no rule for bag contact on the side of the stock, I would want as much height on the sides as as possible. Reality is, most every stock out there is very similar in what actually makes a stock work. Mostly the differences are cosmetic. A 2x4 thats straight will do the job nicely. Id try and shoot both, but would prefer as little contact on the rifle as possible. Tracking is mainly a function of how parallel the front and rear surfaces are. If they are perfect the crosshairs wont leave the x when you pull the stock back. If they never come off the x they dont have to find their way back to it.

Thank you all for the excellent info.

I will concentrate on selecting my stock on merits of tracking. I did not know that having a stock with a drop recoils harder. I really appreciate the info.

I was one of the three designers of the JTR. Br benchrest stock of Robertson composites. the J in JTR

Alex knows of what he speaks , listen well,

He has also designed a very very nice br long range stock,

It would be neat to do a article or a chapter in a book on the creation of or components to a good stock

They make the SGY Robertson stocks, that looks really nice.

Unfortunately, it does not seems that they make the GBF stocks.
