The Squirrel Hunting Thread 2016

I had a friend from Virginia that said if I shot some squirrels for him he had the best recipe ever, squirrel and noodles. Said it was the BEST thing ever. So I shot a bunch and he cooked em. It was so bad I never killed another one, sorta like a bad night of tequila. Another buddy with us thought the same as me. Plenty of them around here but they've been safe since then. I'm willing to give it a try again but I need a good way to cook them up.

They're good, I told you you need to try them again with a different cook.lol You should have known better when you seen him pull the top ramen out of the cabinet. lol

Crock pot with onions, potatoes, carrots, celery, water to cover the veggies, beef bouillon to cups of water, cook for the afternoon. Remove squirrels, debone, return meat, enjoy.

I am looking forward to hunting this year. They are causing me issues so they must go. Granted I just go for hits.

Went out to the Delaware Wildlife area, just north of Columbus Ohio. Tried a new set of woods. There was actually some construction going on, and some very large dump trucks drove by a few times...only 50 yards away. Normally, there isn't anyone for miles.

The place looked good, lots of nuts on the ground, both whole and cut by squirrels. Even though it rained a few hours earlier, and it's been cooler, I soon had to spray myself for mosquitoes. After only about 10 minutes in the woods, I started calling with my fake squirrel cutting device: A 20 gauge shotgun shell (spent of course) and a 4 inch long bolt. Flatten the end of the shotgun shell, and scrape is over the threads of the bold. It sounds just like a squirrel cutting on a nut. It can really pull them in.

Soon a red comes by. Those things are so fast, and they never sit still. This one was only 20 yards away. By the time I got the gun off my shoulder, it was gone. Zippy little creatures. After about another 10 minutes, another red went the other direction on the same tree! Probably the same one. Still didn't get off a shot. If I don't get a shot off on a red, it doesn't bother me.

Another 5-10 minutes, I hear a squirrel cutting on a nut, and it's rather close. It's GOT to be that red I saw a few minutes ago. With the rain we had earlier, I can move rather quietly...except for snapping twigs, and they're all over the place. I get close to the tree that's got the cutting squirrel, but I just can find it. (very thick woods) I wait, I wait, I wait. Nothing. Eventually, it stops cutting and I never hear/see anything more.

I move 75 yards further into the woods. I call and call. Nothing. Then a backhoe drives down the road. Great, these squirrels aren't suburban squirrels and that noisy backhoe probably scared the crap out of them. 10 minutes later, two dump trucks come down the road in the opposite direction. I'm figuring I should just go home. This is not some country road, rather it is part of the park system, so it's not like I'm shooting near a real road. It's more of a path.

While I'm considering giving up for the day because of the trucks, I see movement in the top of a tall tree. SQUIRREL! And it's a fox, not a red! I follow it as it moves, it jumps from one tree to another. Still rather hard to follow because of the dense woods. And soon...I loose it. I wait..nothing. Dang! I lost it! But after 5 minutes, I hear nut cutting, right up in the area I've been looking. That fox squirrels got to be the one cutting. I quietly move around for a better view, and I FIND it. It's sitting on a tall branch, and I can only see it's head and hind end. I'm not next to a tree..which I need to stabilize myself when I shoot. This thing can see me (I think). But I have no alternative, I must take a few steps to stand next to a tree. I slowly take the steps, the squirrel doesn't move, I raise up my 22, pull the trigger. Bullet went in through the mouth, exit out the back of the neck. Dead right there. I was pretty pleased with the shot considering how high up the tree it was. From this angle, the squirrel looks HUGE compared to the gun. It's just an illusion.

See you're far enough north you get true "reds". I have to drive about an hour to get those. We do have an over abundance of Fox squirrel in Muskingum and Coshocton counties.

Hey guys, a question about those Fox squirrels. Do they taste the same as a gray squirrel or different. We do not have them in my neck of the woods.

BTW, nice story and write up OVS, enjoyed it.

Thanks

My pallet can taste the difference. Even with beef broth, I can taste the woodsy flavor of the grey over the rich fatty taste of the fox.

I prefer the greys, but love to hunt the fox more.

when cooked the fox squirrels bones have a red tint, they take longer to cook than greys, in the northern panhandle of wv grays are scarce, painter

I like hunting and killing them but they are such a pain to clean! Mom used to bitch while picking off the hair that we would leave! I tried the air method last and it still was a PITA. I prefer rabbits for more meat and ease of skinning.

I hope to get out Saturday first light for my first session of the season. Will post results if I get to go.
Just brought my wife home from knee replacement surgery so hall pass may not be available yet....

Any of you professional squirrel hunters ever hear of a gland in or near the armpit of the squirrel that can make the meat taste bad??? Nephew showed me once...I am not a big squirrel hunter by no means. It looked like a little piece of fat, not very big. he shot a mess of them and made the soup with the homemade noodles. Pretty much exactly like the recipe posted here except we used chicken broth instead of beef.
I helped skin and clean them and he went ballistic when he found I was leaving that little gland thing on. Never knew such a thing existed. Is it for real or was he pulling my leg????

I've killed probably a few thousand in my hay day, never heard that one before.

Separate the head and feet, make an incision in the middle of the back, stick fingers in the incision and pull in opposite directions. The skin will deglove leaving clean meat, turn the Squirrel over and gently squeeze its abdomen, causing the stomach to swell. Lightly slice the abdomen from anus to chest, point the knife through the breast bones, pull innards from neck to stomach, not the other way round. Takes about 2min per squirrel.

I'll second this! I much prefer rabbit as table fare and ease of cleaning. Also I'm partial to beagles over tree dogs. Squirrel hunter's carry on however, it's all good!

Yeah, we have a lot of reds around here. (surprisingly very few grey) I can't stand them. They're too small, too quick and they never sit still. Hard to get them with a 22. If I'm going to eat squirrels, I want to use a 22. I don't eat reds. So I often don't take the shot anymore. (and I usually don't stalk them) But they're aggressive and hard on grey and fox, so if I do have a clear shot, I'll take it. Whenever I'm out with my 22 and hear a red, I always wish I had a shotgun...just for a moment.

But two years ago, I did have a good day with the reds: (and no, that's not a backwards pic, I'm left handed)
