1000 yard match trends...

I have been looking at match reports, and there is an unmistakable trend to smaller calibers and higher BC's. Velocity does not seem to matter, low recoil does.

I think I have come up with the ultimate case/bullet package.

I will be putting a rifle together chambered for the 22 Hornet Improved using 90gr Berger Hybrid .224" bullets.

What say you?

Rich

I think velocity is part of Bc .
Accuracy normally beats BC
But if you have the same accuracy BC should win
You can try it Larry

Better put a BUNCH of slope in that base..:)

Modify vernier sights for a scope mount? Then you'll fix the scope and set elevation on the vernier?

First I would point out that there is no such bullet. The Berger 90 gr .224 bullet is a VLD, not a Hybrid. As an F-TR shooter that uses the 90 VLDs in competition regularly (.223 Rem case), you are right about the minimal recoil. However, I wouldn't say that velocity doesn't matter. Quite the contrary, both velocity and very good precision are also necessities. In F-TR, you can get away with using this bullet because at the velocities you can push it from the .223 Rem case it is competitive out to 1000 yd and can more than hold its own with .308 loads containing up to 185 Juggernaut bullets. However, the small size of the .223 Rem case limits the velocity that can reasonably be obtained, and many that are shooting the 90 VLDs in the neighborhood of 2850 fps have also found brass life to be pretty poor.

You didn't mention what type of matches you would shoot this rifle in, but if you're thinking F-Open, I'd be curious to know what kind of velocity you'd expect of of the Hornet Improved case? A friend of mine is working up a 22-250 to shoot this bullet, and he expects to get in the 3100 fps range. I'm not sure what the case capacity of the Hornet Improved would be, but the case dimensions of even the Improved version don't look like they're geared toward a bullet as heavy as the 90 VLD. Just my opinion, but I would think you want a case more like the 22-250 so that you can get good velocity, as well as minimal recoil.

I believe I know which match he will be shooting in in. I'm not sure on the exact location but it's somewhere near a beach in Arizona. It's only held once a year on April 1st. I think there's a 1 million Dollar prize and it's limited to one shooter. I say go for it with odds like that!!.;););)

I see. Thought there might be something funny about the choice of cases, but didn't really want to tell the OP he was a complete dipstick for choosing that. Guess the jokes' on me ;).

I hope he wasn't serious smile Larry

I would put some choke in the barrel too, down towards the muzzle. don't forget fluting, cryo, nitriding, oh hell, what else is there???????

Why limit yourself to a 50" barrel? This is what you really need to make up for the small case capacity:
