Cleaning Bronz Brushes

I have now bought all the recommended cleaning supplies and equipment I have been told I need. I was told though that the higher ammonia content in the better cleaning solutions, attack bronze brushes and that I should rinse them in Brake or Carburetor Cleaner. Only problem is that I have been to about 10 stores, including Auto Parts stores and can not seem to get any of those two items in anything by a gallon container or a spray can. What happened to the old screw top metal cans of about 12 to 24 ounces. What does everyone use to clean and rinse their bronze brushes?

Thanks, Bob

I deal with this everyday in the tunnel as I clean a lot of barrels; mostly 416 stainless benchrest barrels.

I use a wide mouth pint plastic jar filled with denatured alcohol. After brushing, swish the brush around briskly in the bottle until all traces of the blue goop is washed away and your bronze brush will last a long time.

Thanks Guys, For the time being, I now have a bottle of Rubbing Alcohol in my range box along with an appropriate sized glass jar.

Nobody really specified non chlorinated brake cleaner? This stuff works great...

IS that an aerosol can? I can find plenty of those, but was hoping to get something that was in regular liquid form. I called another NAPA and they are ordered me a can of something that is only 10 ounces and they will have for me this afternoon.

I have an empty 4 oz Hoppes bottle filled with denatured alcohol. I remove the brush, wipe it with clean paper towel, dip it in the alcohol, wipe again with paper towel, and put it back in the original packet. I have several 2" headless nails in place near the bench. Hang them there until needed again.

Walmart, advanced auto, autozone, pepboys...

Soap and hot water. Never seen a bronze brush break down after I've clean them that way. Anything more is over-kill in my opinion.

Since its hard to have some concoctions cleaning at a match i just tape a bottle of water onto the leg of my table and swish it in there. If i dont have that i just spray it with carb/brake cleaner. Works everytime

Thanks Again guys. I am glad that I am a little Excessive Compulsive as that seems to be a prerequisite for precision long range shooting.

The local Napa Auto Parts got me a can of liquid B-12 ChemTool Fuel System Cleaner, that they said they thought would do the job. Anyone ever heard or used this stuff?

Today I shot for the first time a Henry Golden Boy that I bought to play with. If I had shot this a few months ago, I would have brushed it with Hoppes No. 9, patched it and swabbed it with Rem Oil, but no more. It got the full treatment today, but getting a bore guide for a lever action seems problematic! :o I did rig up something though to absorb anything that got into the action before it got into the trigger etc. :P

Cheers,

Just a squirt of brake cleaner, or Quick Start does the trick on cleaning brushes, or swish around in de natured alcohol.

Watch the paper on auto supply houses, get the quick start, brake clean on sale.

There are "muzzle protectors" that are coned bushings that drop in the muzzle. They at leat keep the crown from being wrecked and help keep the rod more centered.
Here's some at Midsouth;https://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/search?SearchTerm=muzzle+protector
