6.5x284 PET LOAD'S ANYBODY ?

Hello, I have a Savage BVSS in 6.5x284 with a 1x8 twist. Can anybody share a pet load with me. Weight of bullet doesn't matter at this point.

Thanks

I'm using 48.4g H4350/FGM210M/Lapua brass/142g SMK @ 2.9450" COAL. Anywhere in the park 48.0- 49.0g will probably hit you a home run with a 142g SMK. Brand new custom build got me 198-10x and 199-12x in practice yesterday. Shoots in the 0.2's, low 0.3's easily.

Prior to the custom build I had a Savage F-Class that I used H4831SC with. That was a decent shooter, but no comparison to the custom. That shot me 196's consistently with Jason's work-up in the 51.0g- 51.9g of H4831SC and I ended up using 51.3g as a match load.

You have more than enough load data here- http://www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/65x284/. Pay attention to th excerpt from Jason in the yellow box.... start with ONE combination of components until you prove it doesn't work. Don't make it complicated. Lapua brass, 142g SMK or 139g Scenar, CCI BR2 or F210M primers and H4350 or H4831SC. I'd go 142g SMK and H4350 no matter what other stuff you choose.

I recently re-barreled my 6.5X284 and wanted to try a new load. I started with 47.9, 48.1, 48.3, 48.5 and 48.7 grains of H4350 with CCI BR Primers. 47.9 went 2943 but the ES was 25. 48.1 went 2971 and the ES was 20 (shot .340). 48.3 went 2986 and the ES was 3 (shot under .250). 48.5 went 2996 and the ES was 4 (shot .344). 48.5 went 2996 and the ES was 4 (shot .350). 48.7 went 3015 with an ES of 5 (shot .357 but the bolt lifted hard).

I really wanted to be in the 2930 fps range but the accuracy and ES wasn't there when I used H4350. I have gone back to my 51.3 load of H4831 with F210M primers and the velocity is 2934 with an ES of 6 (shoots under .250). This was the best load with my old barrel.

All bullets shot were Sierra 142 MK's sorted for base to ogive and pointed. Kreiger 8 twist and a Remington 700 action.

I hate to waste rounds working up a load as the barrel life in a 6.5X284 is short so any help I can get is always welcome.

Your mileage may vary.

My gun shoots good with 53 grains of H4831, but I think it shoots better with vv165 the best load was devolped in jan and proved tooooo hot for any other time in so FL. But I belive vv165 will be the best went all is worked out, and maybe one of the 5 series vv powders.

Like Gonzos, I keep reverting back to H4831SC for all five barrels I have gone through on the 6.5X284
I have tried R22, N560, N160, H4350 with 142gr Match kings, Berger 140gr VLD's and my current 140gr Berger BTLR load.
Its not that I didnt have good luck with the other powders by anymeans but this combo of 51 to 54grains of H4831SC has been super consistant accurate over a large string of shooting time after time, barrel after barrel. Velocity depended on the barrel from 2920fps all the way up to 3090fps. all 30" tubes.

So that is my pet load.

Lapua or Norma Brass, 140gr Berger BTLR, 51 to 54gr of H4831SC, Older lot of 210 Match primers. .001 nk tension

Good luck

My rifle liked 51 gr of H4831 SC w/fed match primers, 142 gr Sierras, jumping them .005. I first tried just touching the lands, but jumping proved to be the best. Rifle shot in the low 2s. Larry in western Ky

49grn RL17
140grn Berger
CCI PRIMER
Lapua brass

Several g-hogs that were up to 1260 yards away that can attest to this loads accuracy out of my Cooper Pheonix

50.5grs H-4831SC 130gr vld's bergers work very well in 2 of my 6.5x284's w/210M primers .005 jam your ready

When I first started with the 6.5 x 284 I shot VV N560 (53.5grs.)... Awesome accuracy and S-P-E-E-D ... But primer pockets loosened up after 3 firings. Then I went to H4350 (49.0grs), lost the speed BUT accuracy stayed in place>>>but the primer pockets didn't last any longer. Finally, I went to 54.7grs of H1000 and got the speed I was after (3030f.p.s.) the accuracy was slightly better and primer pockets NEVER loosen up! AND H1000 burns so clean it is almost as if nothing is burning in the barrel..

I use 50 grains of R17 with 130 Norma Diamond line and get 3200 fps roughly. I see guys loading 50 grains or R17 behind a 140 and I don't know how they don't blow up their guns! I have tried several lots- good stuff.

If you have a 30" barrel you can get away with using pedestrian powders like 4350.

When I shot 1000 yd BR I used N160 with 140 Bergers and 142 SMKs. Got my lowest ES that way. With hunting length barrels I use R17 and Mag Pro. Either one are capable of 3000 fps with a 26" barrel and 140 Bergers.

Hi guy i don't want to hijack your post here but i was thinking about the 6.5 x284 because i have dies and a 6.5 barrel only thing that keeps me from doing the 6.5x 284 is i here they are real hard on barrels is this true or what?

Depends on what you consider hard onbarrels I guess. the 7 Rem Mag and most over bore cartidges are about the same.
I have shot all five barrels of mine to 1200 rounds before I pulled them off. All still shot Perfect 200 out of 200 at 1000 yards when I pulled them off. Just could not start the next season with a barrel with 1200 rounds onit. This Last one is right at 1350 and still going.
I hear some folks say 900 rounds but I have never seen that low of a round count on the 6.5X284 personally. I shoot H4831SC in just about all of mine.

I'm curious what you mean by "pedestrian" here...can you explain?

What I think you're saying is that with a longer barrel, you can better utilize a slower burning powder...right?

What throws me is that, of the two seeming "favorite" powders for this cartridge – H4350 and H4831 – the slower one is H4831.

So I'm not sure what you mean by calling 4350 – rather than 4831 – "pedestrian."
