6.5x47

I have a 6BR, and a 6.5x284, had a 6.5x47 in mind shooting the heavier bullets such as the 139 to 142 weight bullets, what are the velocities of these weights bullets getting from the 6.5x47 compared to the 6.5x284

Chet,

For best results you should really post this in the "Big Stuff" forum as that is where 6.5x47 is listed.

With that said, what barrel length do you plan on running?

With bullets over 130 grains the issue with the 6.5x47 L is reduced case capacity over something like the .260 Rem or 6.5 Creedmor. Those long bullets sit well below the case neck in some cases the boat tail is almost below the shoulder. To keep speeds up in the 2950-3000 FPS range with 6.5x47L 130's are going to be about maximum without something like a 30-31" barrel and a good amount of freebore. You could get a little more performance if you weren't magazine feeding, rather single loading the round and extended the freebore a bit more you can gain back some speed.

They'll go faster but it trashes brass.

.............. and to trash a 6.5X47L case you have to load to proof pressure and then by another 10,000 psi. And people do it all the time!

Yes, zombie thread on a subject worked to death years ago, but at least nobody has claimed MVs better than their other rifle, a 6.5-284. Yet! :)

Yeah, I think we've all heard some incredulous numbers, so I will elaborate a little on the constraints of my assertion:

It only gets there with RL16, an 8" drop tube, and a slow pour with a little crunch on seating. Not ideal. H4350 will pressure out sooner and not make it to the same speeds. RL17 will get you there with less powder but is more erratic! You have to watch your temps and adjust. I found 0.1gns per 10degrees. Humidity moves it too. A morning that starts at 50 and climbs to 90 degrees by mid-day, with humidity burning off too, is a pressure rollercoaster. I would have loads with progressively less powder, a swing of 0.5gns, in my box to move to as the day progressed to keep velocity and pressure safe and consistent.

My freebore is 0.166 and more would be better. This is perfect for 135-140 class bullets but is too short for 150+. The base of the bullet sits at the shoulder-body junction, encroaching in the powder space.

I'm using a Borden BRL action. I've never had a receiver that handles pressure like this one. It has very strong extraction and I think a lesser action would show heavy bolt lift. I'm on reload number 6 on my Peterson brass and the pockets are looser now but still usable.

I've stopped using the 153.5 Berger because I can't keep it tuned adequately for benchrest. It would be fine for PRS or less demanding accuracy types.

I know this load is very high pressure because it firecracked the barrel and accuracy fell off in 900 rounds.

I prefer to run 140 class bullets in the neighborhood of 2820 now.

Ouch!

I've heard of similar barrel life with the cartridge in UK McQueens (200/300 yard sniper)) and Tactical competition. The gunsmith who told me this was a 6.5X47L fan for some years but saw way too many overloads being used and picked up on this from the frequency he was rebarreling some of his customers' rifles. One repeat customer when queried also mentioned that he only used his brass once, junking it immediately!

My gunsmith friend has, like a lot of his fellow 'Tacticals' / PRS competitors over here moved to the 6.5 Creedmoor loading the new generation heavy bullets. (I know, wash my mouth out ............ !!) They get the MVs they were aspiring to in the 6.5X47L but at acceptable pressures. This generation of custom built tacticals with top notch rifle components really do shoot well. We have a 'Military' class in our F-Class matches and they hold their own with 7mm using F-Open competitors out to 800 yards unless the wind gets really twitchy despite smaller cartridges and four or five inches less barrel.
