I have been planning to build a varmint gun and scope it with a Weaver Grand Slam 5-20x50 Varmint EBX for about 2 years. Finally, I am ready to buy, but to my dismay this scope has been discontinued. Not only that, but I missed them closing out for like 360. I have searched high and low, and the only alternative that floats my boat seems to be the Leupold VX3i 6.5-20 varmint hunter. I still prefer the simplicity of the Weaver. Burris may be a third option. I have no problem shopping used scopes. Budget is 300 to 500 preferably, but I could go up to 1,000 if it was just what I wanted. It will go on a savage 12fv .223, or a savage 12 LRPV left port if I land a job I have an interview for next week.

This will be my first BDC type scope. I have always just used a duplex, fine xhair, or my favorite, the weaver varminter reticle.

This gun will be shot from a caldwell stable table at ground squirrel and prairie dogs, and it will do nothing else.

If you might want to part with a weaver grand slam, send me a PM. I have a VX3 1.5-5x20 for trade or straight cash.

Just saw a Weaver V24 w/Varminter reticle over on rimfirecentral.com classifieds. Wondering out loud if they might have the same glass as the Grand Slams.

The Weaver Classic Extremes are nice alternatives.

Love my varmint ebx reticle. It is my all time favorite for PD's and I wouldn't part with it for nothing.

Keep looking though, they are out there new in box. The 4-16x44 is available in a lot of places.

The grand slam is better, maybe like a vx3 or bushy 4200.

V24 is good. The image goes downhill after 18 or 20 x and the eye relief is a little critical, but i would not sell mine.

Amazon has em. Try calling around to a couple "big" gun shops. I found mine on a dusty shelf in Yuma Arizona. Weaver goes in and out of production. If their catalogue has it it will be in production "at some point" during the year. Perhaps call them directly and find out which gun shops ordered them and then start calling around. You obviously know it's worth the trouble... they are outstanding scopes.

Take note amazon says backorder and the other sites did say backorder but most now say discontinued or they have removed it completely from their website. A guy at RFC called weaver. They said all grand slams are discontinued and the v24.

Oops; old guy brain fart. Now I remember SWFA’s scope-ranking list from a few years back, which had the Grand Slam up there with those guys, and the Vs a notch lower — about like the Bushnell 4200 vs. their 3200 at the time. (I don’t visit that site much anymore; they’ve probably updated that list by now).
Always wanted one of those first Grand Slams, as they were probably one of the best bargains in a good-glass scope out there. Would almost bet no Weaver-labeled scopes are made at Light Optical Works anymore, and all from Taiwan or Red China now.

As far as i know the V and T series or higher are still made at LOW. The cheaper lines i think philipenes or taiwan.

I think that reticle is a copy of the Leupold varmint hunter and Burris E1 reticle is also a copy(improved in my opinion). Try either one of those excellent brands should be no trouble finding them.
