FN America has unveiled a prototype of its new Mk 48 Mod 2 machine gun in the 6.5mm Creedmoor cartridge, which it developed in response to a U.S. Special Operations Command requirement. American special operations forces are interested in acquiring an “assault” machine gun in this caliber, which would offer better range than existing weapons that use the smaller 5.56x45mm cartridge, but would still be lighter than more traditional light machine guns....

It all makes sense to me. That 5.56 just didn’t cut it at range. Of course the Browning .50 could really reach out if only you could carry it. You know, they’ve made it so much easier since my time.
First they got rid of the flint lock, then they got motorized vehicles, then they invented airplanes ......................

Makes no sense IMO. A high BC 6.5 cartridge isn't needed for this weaponry. A 30 caliber based cartridge is sufficient for a barrel burning machine gun. I'd imagine half the barrel life of a 30 caliber 308 cartridge. It's taking the Creedmoor thing a bit far

I'd say they deserve it. They did the work then went out on a limb to stock the shelves with very good, very affordable ammunition and promoted it every inch of the way. Lapua or Remington could have done the same with the 6.5x47 or the .260 but did not.

Reward seldom comes without the risk.

Barrel are consumables just like powder and bullets, those barrels are the last thing they worry about. With such a large operating budget its doesnt make dent.

It seems like the logistics of having different cartridges.wouldn’t be so good. Mabie they will develop a battle rifle in same caliber.

Would be nice to get all that brass if you had a Creedmore.. Lake City brass. Wonder what the cost for retooling would be?

There's mention of a .338 Lapua intermediate machine gun, as well - something 'more' than a .7.62mm but 'less' than a .50.

I get that and of course money is no object but the 6.5 has plenty of merit, just not in a machine gun platform. Just my opinion. It will make the brass a more available and cheaper product to acquire. I suppose that's the upside.

Short barrel life opens a lot of logistical problems. Think of it this way. Now when you go into combat you have to carry twice as many barrels. Barrels are heavy. ON a machine gun barrels often last less then a thousand rounds. In saving private wryan they waited for the germans to switch barrels. Because ya you have to do it a lot.
