I keep thinking this set up might be a poor mans comp match. The case capacities are real close.
What says the think tank? Could it strongly resemble the 6Comp Match in the areas of velocity and barrel life?

Think you need a long barrel for a powder that slow in 6mm Remington.

I have had extensive experience with the 6mm Rem BUT only as far as hunting is concerned. It is a fabulously accurate cartridge, especially in Ackley form! I used to drive 95gr Combined Technology Ballistic Silver Tips at a bit over 3400 f.p.s. out of a 6mmRem Ackley using a 26" barrel! I would think, using say RL-26 and a 115 DTAC in a 30" barrel, you should be able to TOP 3300 easily with the Ackley version. Now whether the 115 DTACS could withstand that level if velocity out of an 8 twist over 25 shots would be anyone's guess. But I believe the speed and accuracy would be there!

The performance will be there, but you'll need a long action in order to load heavy .243caliber bullets where they like to sit. If you've got a short action, you'll be havin' to choke them bullets so far down the neck that'd be a waste of space/time for no net performance gain...

I ran a 6 Rem for a few years as a a long range prone gun, it shot well with VV n165 could run the 115's and 105's plenty fast, but they seemed to shoot best well below maximum speed, barrel life was ok (1200-1500 rounds) I later switched to a BRX

Seeing as how he was comparing against the 6 Comp Match, a cartridge purposely designed for the 'precision rifle' game, single loading a 6mm REM would most assuredly present a problem.

    Round peg, square hole...

I have tried H1000 with 100gr. Sierra's. I was unimpressed and quit playing with it.

I tried it with 115 VLD's and 115 DTAC's in my 6mm AI and a 7 twist and was able to get 3000 fps @49 gr of H 1000 but after that accuracy fell apart so stopped @ 49 gr. I just pulled my 6mm AI out of the closet and am going to play with her again been 4 years since I was shooting it. I've yet to find any powder better for my 6mm than good old RL 19 or H 4350.

the main holdup on a 6mm rem is the brass situation. this coming from a huge fan with a lifetime supply but I wouldnt try to build a rifle around sucky brass that you cant even find. for hunting its fabulous.

My results were similar. 6 AI with a .268" Neck and a 28" Pac-Nor 8 twist. Running 115 Berger VLD Hunting over 7828-SSC or RL-25, above 3100 fps the bolt gets sticky. Gre-Tan reworked my bolt so primers hold up well, but according to my Chrony 3200 fps ain't gonna happen. After trying standard and Magnum primers and powder charges up to the range of a 240 Weatherby I feel that 3100 fps is the top end for this particular rifle. My home range is 250 yards and I consistently shoot 1" or less at 250. It is built on a short action and that was a mistake, my overall length is 3.060"with the 115.

I have enough brass to last a life time in a hunting rifle, but it is not the easiest brass to find. If I did it over again for a hunting rifle I would skip the neck turn and go with a long action. 6 AI brass is simple to make, in a custom rifle I would not do a straight 6 Rem. The AI has too much going for it to not use it.

To answer the initial question for this thread:
For a target rifle I would not use the 6 Rem or 6 AI because of the brass situation and the overall length. Too many good short action options. If you can come up with the brass and don't mind a long action, go for it.

I've not tried it but I heard you can form 6 Rem out of 7x57 Norma. Don't know how much trouble it would be

Its no trouble at all but still hard to find at times. Limited runs and out of stock when you need it

I just picked up a 6 Rem. I was going to buy some PPU ammo to shoot then reload. It's not Lapua but I've thought their brass is OK. I found it with Ammoseek for $16.50 a box.

    ppu is good to go.

neck down and turn 7x57 Lapua if you can find it.

Older Blue Bag winchester is good.

Have not tried New winchester or Hornady.

    In a 14T, I shoot a zero freebore, 26" = 70g fire forming at 4000, formed 4100-4150, tiny groups.

    In a 12T, 80g zero freebore in formed cases what evers, R#19 , 3800 = tiny groups.

I have 2 6mm Rem, the last one I just picked up from Jon Beanland. It is a real hammer. I have not found brass availability to be a problem. I use Norma 257 Roberts brass, just run them through the FL die and skim the necks. But I'm old school.

I was just pondering the same question. Since you mention the 6CM i assume you are playing the PRS game as am I.

What was your findings? is it possible given mag lengths to stay in?

I just got some 6mm rem brass from sleeping giant. too bad theres not much for match quality brass for it but it makes a great hunting rifle.
