This years project

Chambered in .222 Remington. 6 months of work, sanding dust, worn out fingers and much help from some excellent friends without whom this would never be. This rifle started out as the first rifle my dad ever bought. Somewhere around 1955. It had been neglected and abused by other family members until I rescued it.
Remington 722 action, lapped bolt lugs, Mcgowan RemAge barrel & nut, Kimber hand stop, Morgan adjustable butt plate, Brownells oversized bolt handle, Richards Microfit unfinished laminated stock, (drop in - NOT) Ceracote Titanium metal paint, Ceracote clear wood finish (15 coats) Barrel is free floated, action is pillar & epoxy bedded.
Sightron SIII 6 ~ 20 X 50 riflescope. Trigger is original 1955 (no lawyers) reworked to 1 1/2 lb.

Velocette as in 500 cc Venom 1956 vintage.
Resurrected from a pile. (a pile is two orders of magnitude worse than a basket case)
The only motorcycle I ever made money on - - NOT counting labor.
The rifle is going to my local range Thursday for its break in and first ladder loads.

Well, the proof is in the shooting. After several range trips (hard work you know) The rifle has spoken to me.
It tells me it likes Sierra Match King 52 gr HPBT bullets and Berger 52 gr FBHP bullets. It likes H322 in most
loads, H335 in one load, and LT32 in most loads. N133 and Varget, not so much. Best groups so far are 0.20X 0.25" with SMKs & LT32 with H322
& SMK right behind at 0.21X 0.27. Those same propellants and Berger 52s barely hundredths of an inch more.
These groups are as good as I can hold the rifle in bags. So any one of them could be the best.
All dimensions are center to center. With all bullets and propellants. No group exceeded
one inch and most were less than 1/2". Another really good thing is that all of the best groups were in the
lower end of the load scale so my brass and barrel will have a nice long life.

If you haven't tried it yet, you owe it to yourself to try h4198 and rl7 in a 222. More often than not, h4198 is the go to powder for the triple deuce. Very easy to load for and one of the best loads I've ever found is one right out of Sierra's data for it with h4198

That powder is on my schedule for the weeks ahead. It appears that propellants in
the fast/medium burning range work well in the .222. Medium, Medium / slow not so much.
(eg varget)
I also did not have outstanding results with Berger 55 gr. fb bullets, good but not great.

Senderoman;
The Ceracote clear yields a VERY hard finish. There are 15 coats of Ceracote clear with wetsanding after every 2 or3 application. 320- - 400 -- 600--1000 and then power buffing. The buffing with polishing compound took a long time as the Ceracote is hard hard hard. BUT it resists scratches and abuse.
This rifle is made to be used not to be a safe queen or wall queen. There is about a months work of work just in the Ceracote application and finishing.

Velocette's and Matchless bikes are fairly rare and highly prized by knowledgeable collectors. Very nice rifle.
