The Golden Eagle goes on the Hood Checker

Since I had the Hood scope checker mounted on my BAT/6PPC, I decided to check the Vortex Golden Eagle for POA shift. Yesterday, I checked the Kahles using my Valdada 36X as a control. I left the Valdada in place and replaced the Kahles with the Golden Eagle.

As one can see there is not a lot of room to spare. The Valdada had to be rotated 90 degrees which put the parallax knob down close to the base.

I used two loads for the purpose of adding recoil. Both were loaded with ~ 28.3 gr. of LT-32. One featured Bart's 68 gr. Ultra and the other was a 67 gr. Milton BT. My first shot showed a 1/8th MOA shift in the Vortex. I checked for ring movement and for parallax. There was no ring movement, but there was a hint of parallax. I adjusted that out and fired several shots which showed no movement. I am not making excuse for the movement on the first shot because it may or may not have been the parallax adjustment. I fired the remaining rounds with a different aim point. I used the Vortex for 5 rounds and the Valdada for three. I have great confidence in this scope and I will use it in our next 600 yard match on August 19th. Good shooting....James

That mirrors the testing I did on three Golden Eagles. They all showed a very small first shot shift, and then never moved again. I assume that you, like me, made some adjustments to the turrets before testing.

I want to re-run the same test with turret movements/no turret movements to see if it's a cold shot thing, or if there is a consistent shift/no change after a turret movement. I thought I would shoot a box test with 3-5 shots after every movement.

I think the movement on the first shot or two is the rings settling in. I tested 9 scopes so far and seen movement on 8 of them on the first shot.

I have already done the "box" test and it showed that the scope adjustments are true and repeatable. James

Good to hear. Have a Golden Eagle and really like the HD glass, Have 2 NF comps and they have great glass also, just not better, relative to $$. Steve

Did you shoot multiple shots at each stop on the box? I did a box test early on to verify the click changes and found the same as you (true/repeatable), but this time around, I wanted to do it with a scope checker to verify that the zero at each stop "holds" after a turret change. Meaning, you can shoot 3 or more shots at each stop on the "box" and the scope checker will agree that the POA hasn't changed.

On my original test, I only shot one shot at each stop on the box and I had no scope checker to witness.

I shot 5 times (see above picture) and the 5th shot went through the SAME hole as shot #1. If there was any shift in POA, this would almost be impossible. James

I don't think "ring settling" is a thing. If your scope moves in the rings on the first shot, it's likely moving on every shot or randomly thereafter. From the testing I've done so far (and I've testing some more scopes since I posted my results), first shot movement seems to be pretty common.

The only question for me, yet to be settled, is whether that relates to the turret movements required to witness the scope checker, or if it happens every time out on a "cold" scope, regardless.

I dont think its the rings at all. First shot movement seems to be common. I have had 2 scopes not move even on the first shot, a NF and a March. I dont see how rings can settle.
I did not say that it was the rings. After the first shot, I noticed that there was some parallax error, but I did not know for sure that it was this parallax which caused the movement. Some of you are referring to the test that I did yesterday with the Kahles in which the rings were not tight enough and moved (along with the scope) approximately 1/2 inch. I am not using a Piccatinny type base and I simply failed to tighten all screws sufficiently. After the correction and readjustment of the Kahles, there was no movement. James

I was replying to another poster in this thread regarding ring settling.
