Is this going to do everything I need it to do? I just want to buy once and be done with it,,,is there any reason to spend $500-$600 on a stand? Is there anything that works better in this price range ($300-$350)? Any advice is appreciated.

Ray-Vin F stand and outrigger is one of the best setups you can get.

Get the Eliseo scope head, not the Vin

What are the advantages of the Eliseo over the Ray Vin?

I actually prefer a Manfrotto 055. They will get the scope to the ground, they are lighter and much more stable that a single post stand. I actually cant believe the single post stands are even still in use.

Thanks for all the suggestions men.

Mark,,I shot with you at the Texas mid range shoot. After paying attention to you and Jim Fowler, I knew I had a lot more learning to do.I learned a spotting scope is more than just keeping score with. :o

I had a great time at the match! I'm disappointed it won't be back at Panola in 2016, but hopefully they'll have a Regional or similar. That's how I felt when I first started using the spotting scope to shoot - whew. With a little practice it becomes second nature, and you'll feel disadvantaged without one. Great shooting!!

I have been using this setup for a couple of years now. Works pretty slick. I can easily turn the rod over and use it for a full length spotting scope for scoring. Takes a bit to get the drill down but it's pretty simple. And compact for travel.

Bogen/Manfrotto 3001 and ball head.

jdne5b is spot on. Personally, I find the Eliseo scope head much easier to setup than the Ray-Vin.

It is like looking through a pair of binoculars if you have it set correctly. You are less likely to miss a wind change if you don't have to move your head from the Spotting scope to the Riflescope.
