shank in neck

How much bullet shank do you like in the neck? I know some reloaders only size the neck 1/2 way down, would that be a problem if the bullet goes past the resized depth?

I always full length size with a bushing die(the entire neck), and given the choice, prefer the bearing surface to be just ahead of the neck shoulder junction.

I find that the distance to the lands is a more important concern in regards to accuracy.

So find the jam / jump your rig likes and hope your bullet is just ahead of the shoulder with no doughnut. Right?
thanks

Pretty much. If you know the freebore on your rifle, or you are building one, you can do all the math before ever loading a round.

Either way though, you will want enough room to adjust seating depth without getting back into the neck/shoulder junction, or running out of case neck.

Factor in a magazine for a repeater and then it really gets fun.

The bullets ogive should not go below the case mouth.

I size 1/2 of the 243 win neck with a bushing. The 90 gr bullet shank is below the sized neck part a lot. The 68 gr has less shank in the neck, but has full bullet bearing surface in contact with the sized case neck.

If loading 223 in an AR, the magazine will require heaverier bullet shanks well below the neck shoulder junction. Doesnt seem to hurt accuracy.

To little shank in contact with the neck may case a bullet to get crooked on feeding.. The powder may not burn as well. Getting into bullet pull/neck tension now.

For those of us whose thinking hasn't been "flavored" by watching too many gangsta movies, the question of how much shank in the neck largely depends on how the rifle's throat was cut...uh...sorry, Ryan, another g-movie reference, what I actually meant was, how the rifle has been chambered. ;)

Depending on the caliber, it's usually a safe bet to put the boattail/bearing surface junction somewhere above the case neck/shoulder junction, but not more than approximately halfway out the neck. That gives you about half the case neck length as a working estimate to decide how much freebore the rifle will need for a given bullet. You might be able to seat the bullet a little farther out than halfway, as long as there is enough bullet shank in the neck to hold it. In some cases where donuts are an issue, you might not be able to seat the boattail/bearing surface junction all the way down to the case neck/shoulder junction. Also, most bushing dies don't size all the way to the base of the neck. As a general rule however, seating the boattail/bearing surface junction somewhere within the bottom half of the neck is usually a safe bet.

SAAMI maximum OAL is 2.710" for 243 win. My single shot works with these. A little longer.
The 90 gr Berger has a pressure ring. I would not want the pressure ring in the sized neck area. Just me.
The 68 gr Berger, less shank in the case.

It may not matter but I feel like my guns shoot best when the pressure ring is below the sized portion of the neck but above the donut area. I typically shoot with some amount of jam. Perhaps this allows to bullet to align itself better than if the base were supported by the neck. Just a thought really, but I've done it this way for a while and I feel like it's given me the best results. It may be between my ears but that matters, too.
