Can a small shank Savage action be rethreaded to fit a large shank barrel?
Enough money , Anything is possible. I would not even try. Too many really good old small shank barrels out there. Sell off the Bargain Lg Shank & order the caliber you want that fits your Sm Shank Action. Mike in ct
I don't know if there is enough metal in the receiver ring to allow it to be bored and threaded to fit the large shank barrel. The large shank barrel could be turned down and threaded to fit the small shank receiver though.
Why are you thinking about doing this?
(Threading is done to the male end, tapping is done to the female end)
Don't know that I've ever seen the female end of a barrel... do you have pictures?
It's just easier to turn the barrel down.
You might be able to bore the action and single point thread it. But the action is heat treated. More chance of "oh 5hit" moments.
Small and large thread receivers have the same outside diameter, so not a big deal for a rigid lathe. Turn the tops off the threads and then chase the threads deeper with a carbide threading bit on a boring bar. Not much different than truing up threads on a 700, just taking a little longer as you're cutting deeper. I have several single shot actions with small threads, but I often wished I had one with large threads. Might have to tackle it someday. Wish they made the target action available with small threads as well as large.
7-6.5 PRC AI, just for fun.
I did not say barrel.
Ah , both ends .
Tap an action, thread a pipe/barrel.
I wouldnt tap an action but it would be easy to thread it to large shank.
Just turn down and thread .7 inch of your large shank barrel to small shank threads. Then you can screw it into your small shank action and set the head space and tighten it down with the large shank lug and nut. No chamber work necessary
Why bother? Savage prefits are widely available in any caliber you want in both large and small shank..
