I am putting together a 6AI and cant decide if i should start with 6mm or 7x57 brass. My reamer cuts a .278 neck. any one know the loaded diameters of either of these? thanks

You may have to neck turn your 7x57- I have a 6 AI and used straight 6rem winchester Brass. I have some 7x57 Norma sitting here and haven’t found a need to try it- accuracy is outstanding with some brass prep and neck clean up using Win brass

My guess is it's going to be close. Maybe no more than a skim cut, if that.
What is the brass neck wall thickness? .016 or less should work. Let us know. :)

Like having a loaded round to measure made from PPU 7X57 (big bunch bought cheap from Graf 6 years ago) neck .268 loaded round. Fired & un-sized .275 (I allow .001 for spring back), neck walls .014. Yes, I turn necks for both 7X57 & 6MM. The difference is that much more brass needs to be removed for the 7X57. For the 6MM a clean up suffices. I fire form 7X57 using COW (cream of wheat & pistol primers) and after the fireform process a 6mm bullet will not slip fit inside the un-turned 7X57 neck. I turn necks after fire forming then no expander button.

I am a fan of PPU brass and when 6mm brass was unavailable I used 7X57. Ultimate 6mm AI loads would probably use Norma 7X57 brass. The next batch of brass I buy for my 6mm AI will probably be 6mm PPU or Hornady. The 6mm AI is so much fun to shoot I now need a new barrel. Graf's has a sale on PPU 6mm brass.

The 6mm AI is a great choice but needs measured pace shooting - what twist rate is it going to be?

Just out of curiousity- what did you get for Barrel life/round count out of your 6AI, I built one a year ago- and after load work up and a winter of coyote calling I have 296 on it. It’s an 1:8x26” Shilen.

Close to 2,000, a mix of 105's with H1000, Re23 and 87's with 4000MR after 5 years. Still shoots good for most rodents, I can hit a pop can size target most of the time at 500 (calm day). It is a McGowen D4 8 twist. Soon to be cloned.

I’ve been shooting 87&95 berger hunting vld’s with N-160 &N-165. Sure is a great round- made the mistake of building on a short action- I bought a donor action and once coyotes are done for the season I’ll swap it over to a long action and utilize that fast twist and still be able to feed from the mag...... live and learn

The absolute pinnacle in 6mm brass is rws in 7x57. Its a lifetime brass but it will need work and specialized tools to get it right. Itll need to be formed in a bushing die, expanded and neck turned after fire forming with no bullet. Its a lot of work but its the best brass made by far
