    My BFP (big friggen pistol)

First off I've always wanted a long range pistol built on a XP 100 action. About three years ago I purchased a XP100 blueprinted action complete with a PT&G PPC coned bolt from another 6mmBR forum member "Melvin". Not being sure where to get a specialty stock made I just put the action in the safe. Every once in a while I'd see a picture on this forum of a great looking XP stock by forum member "Preacher". So I decided to contact him to find out if he possibly new of anyone that I might commission to build me a stock. I really wanted something different, I wanted a stock with a long 3" wide forearm to support a over 20" full bull barrel and enable better bag tracking. Instead of using the regular clear coat finish I wanted to use a product called Arrow Wood Finish. Preacher apparently took pity on this old man's desire to own something a little different and offered to build the stock for me. The amazing thing is he doesn't use a duplicator, his stock are hand carved and crafted.

Here's my new 25-284 Win wildcat switch barrel XP 100 long range bench pistol. She's a big girl with scope weighing in at 14.2 lbs and a long drink of water at 32&1/2" oal, best of all she'll flat out shoots. Can you believe these three shot groups shot by "Preacher" while doing load development. What's remarkable is that this barrel isn't even broke in yet he achieved these results after shooting only nine shots and cleaning after each shot and then shooting three 3-shot groups with the hunting bullet of my choice, a 115gr NBT. I'm using the 25-284 barrel out high stands on our lease for deer hunting and feral hog control.

It's a switch barrel but I haven't yet install the the second barrel which is chambered in 22BR. I plan on putting it to good use this summer in the prairie dog towns. I'm already familiar with loading for the 22BR and it should be as simple as just fine tuning one of my already proven loads in time for the shooting season. So I'll have to wait a while to comment on that barrel.

While Preacher was busy making my stock my action was at another smith, Mark Pharr of Tumbleweed Custom Rifles located down here in Texas. I had Mark open the coned PPC bolt face to .473, install a rocker style bolt release, pin a .250 tapered PT&G lug, install a Jewell and set it at 6oz, bush the firing pin hole and turn the Callahand speed lock assembly firing pin to fit and chamber a barrel in 22BR with zero free bore to shoot the 40gr Vmax.

I can't begin to say how enjoyable this build became after I finally got the action delivered to Preacher, he preferred to have my action for the pillar/glass bedding work even though he had a XP action that he could have used to do the bedding work. He wanting to be sure that the results of all his hard work provided as stress free as possible bedding job on my action, the man is a perfectionist. Sometime during the stock build Preacher and got to talking about his pet wildcat cartridge the 25-284 Win and I wisely ask him if it would chamber me a new barrel for that cartridge. He agreed to do the addition work and suggested that he use a straight 1.250 contour Brux barrel which we decided to finished at 22" and install one of Harrell's muzzle brake. Preacher really provided service way above and beyond what one would ever expect for any smith, helping to make this project fun and doing everything within his power to insure that it turned out to be everything I hope it might be. Without his help and dedication to quality this project would have never taken shape. I truly owe him a debt of gratitude. This build has most definitely exceed my expectations and it's been sometime since I've been able to say that.

I'm hoping that this unique heavy XP pistol might get consideration for placement in "Guns Of The Week".

    Regards
    RJinTexas

    My 6BRX:

    BAT Model MB Multi Flat
    Bartlein 1 in 8 Barrel
    Precision Rifle and Tool Stock
    Paint by Tuck

Editor's NOTE: This is the new Precision Rifle Sales lowboy Brenchrest stock. The grip area is different than on the F-Class stock. It is designed so you can slip your hand along the side, with thumb in behind the tang, without wrapping your hand around for a full grip, as you would when "hard-holding".

My NRA Long Range / F-Class in 6.5 Creedmoore. A Rem 40X trued, pillar beded, chambered, crowned, all by Truman Wilson, Super Stocks, Delta CO. A Hart 1:8 light varmit at 29" with a Jewell trigger. Stock work by Done Trevor. It can be used as a switch barrel if I want. Scope is an Osprey 10-40X in Burris Tactical 30mm rings on Ken Farrell 20 MOA bases. It doesn't ride the bag very well but will take a bipod. So far all my use in matches has been LR.

My cheap F-class gun. Remington 700 LA in .280 Remington, Douglas #8 1.200" tapered to 1.00" 28 inches long, Weaver 24t, Leupold 15moa base & rings, Remington BDL wood stock with aluminum, lead, fiberglass and some bondo. Did most of the work myself. Will do 1/3 MOA most of the time. Shot my first 1000yd f-class string in 20-30mph winds and got 170, hope to return in better conditions. Thanks Accurate shooter.com for the inspiration!

I built this rifle for my son for deer hunting since the springfeild I built for him several years ago was stolen. I left it un- blued so he can put something in it for himself and appreciate it more. This is my best effort to date. I really enjoy turning blocks of wood into things of beauty. the way I see it I'm just exposeing Gods creation ,as nothing can match the beauty of natural wood and stone.
    thanks for looking,

My new F-Open gun, inspired by Charles Ballard's gun but a lower budget:
    • Savage RBLP target action. Sharpshooter Supply installed their Evolution trigger, did a time & true, and polished the body (I hate that the entire side of the action is a giant warning label/disclaimer) and fluted the bolt (and yes, I bought the action from SSS and it took waaaaay longer than promised).
    • 30" Benchmark 3-groove barrel chambered in .284 Win. and custom throated for the Berger 180 Hybrids, 1:9 twist
    • Precision Rifle & Tool lowboy stock with adjustable cheekpiece and Tubb buttplate
    • Nightforce BR 12-42x56 scope with Bench Source 20moa base and Burris Signature Zee rings

The stock was bedded and clearcoated by my local smith, Omar Alonzo. It came with a Whidden bedding block but it the block was installed with the front sitting higher than the rear (but it did not come that way from PR&T, I won't name names since it's moot). Omar had to mill the block to level it in the stock, relieve the rear pillar to clear the Evolution trigger (an issue with any Savage stock and this trigger), polished the trigger guard, and then skim bedded it.

It kinda peeves me that I can't take advantage of the bedding block, but I waited so long I didn't want to do the ship back and forth, I just wanted a functioning gun.

On the plus side, since I was already spending money to fix that, I had him clearcoat the stock while he had the gun; the IMO the high gloss blue looks fantastic. Also, it shoots great, handles like a dream in the rest, and I can't wait to shoot it at next month's match at Bayou Rifles.

I've only put 50 shots through it. I started pretty low with my load development, because the most accurate load so far has been 56.3gr of H4831SC and Wolf LR behind the 180 Hybrid jumped 0.020". Necked up and turned Lapua brass. I only get 2760fps with that load, probably because of lower pressures due to jumping the bullet instead of jamming, like everyone does with the 180 VLDs. I have also been told by other shooters that they've had to bump their loads 1gr with recent lots of H4831SC (from 56.0 to 57.0) to maintain velocities. I'm going try to work my way up to 2850fps or so. Also, it could be the case that the barrel will speed up in the first 100-200 rounds (my .260 barrel sped up 150-200fps in the first 200 rounds shooting the same exact load).

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised it came out such a deep blue. The unfinished laminated was much more muted, more blue gray, but even then it didn't have a lot of green in it, so I guess YMMV with these things.

I've got a SSS stock in red and black laminate that I may have clearcoated too. I had finished it with Minwax Antique Oil Finish per this thread on THR, it is a deep red that looks pretty good, but it may look even better with a high gloss wet look.

Finally completed my new 300 WSM build for ground hog/varmint shoots and 300/600 yard league.

Savage Target action with PT&G oversize bolt body, sss true/time and evo trigger.

30’’ Brux 10 twist 1.250’’ barrel with Harrell’s break hung in a 5.5’’ aluminum barrel block.

McMillan MBR Tooley stock with the butt reworked with a 5/8 flat that is also drilled and threaded for a removable 2.250’’ darling guide. I milled the stock parallel with the forearm and screwed a piece of stainless to it and used fiberglass to shape it.

Sightron 10-50x60 scope in Burris signature zee rings on Ken Farrel base.

    Weight is 22+ pounds

Only have 60 rounds through it with 208 amax bullets, but it looks like it is going to shoot very well.
I shot it before it was painted and the first 5 shot group at 125 yards was under .5’’ and this was shots 6-10 on the barrel after sight in. Load was H4350, 208 amax .020 jump, F210m primer. Starting to do some load devopement now.

My latest project arrived home yesterday, nicknamed Ol’ Red by the stock maker.
    Specs are as follows:
Kelbly Atlas action; serial 0001P (prototype) Smithed by Kelbly’s of Ohio; including a coned bolt and TG static ejector.
    Bill’s bolt knob
Tom Myers of X-Treme Shooting products supplied the outstanding 2-stage trigger
    8-32x56 NightForce NXS
6.5x47 Lapua cut with custom reamer from Dave Kiff; PT&G
Bartlein barrel 1-8 twist, canted land 30” long
Stock is a color called “Applejack”. Everything from a raw blank to what you see here, including the bedding with Devcon and the finish work was done by Mike Schenz also of Ohio. If the design looks familiar it should, it has been copied from a popular McMillan design. The final pic is my current 600 yd. group fired from 104 yards sling/prone.
    Thanks for looking,
    Lloyd
