Newer Savage Model 10 with rusty chamber

I bought a brand new Savage Model 10 GRS in 6.5 Creedmoor back in February. I have put maybe 500 rounds through it without problems. I took it to the range last week and after my 1st shot the bolt was jammed closed. I had to use a piece of firewood to break the bolt free. Fired one more shot and same thing, totally jammed. Drove to my local gunsmith who looked it over and told me my chamber is horribly rusted! I store the gun in my safe that’s inside my house. I don’t have a dehumidifier because I’ve never seen any rust on any of my other guns. I called Savage and they had me pay shipping to ship it to them for repairs. I have many questions, but most importantly is why did this happen? Anyone else hear of newer Model 10’s with bad barrels? Could this all be because I don’t have a dehumidifier? 533810CB-AD69-4A4E-879D-CC508120A3C5.jpeg

Never, ever heard of this with a Savage barrel, I've been shooting and owning many factory barrels for years. Most of the guys I shoot with own or have owned them and I've never heard tell of this from them or on forums that I have belonged too. So, my speculation would have to be, cleaning solvents of some sort left behind. I could be wrong, will not be the first time.

If it was me, I'd go after the chamber with a bore brush on a drill motor. Get the shine back then, do the bore cleaning thing. After that, LOTS of oil. Then, I would be looking at what type of cleaning chemicals I was using and what caused the rust to form and then maybe be checking on the type of ammo I used. Corrosive? Me thinks the cleaners did the deed.
OR, send it back to Savage and let them deal with it, even tho it wasn't their problem. Of my 6+ Savage rigs, NEVER had any rust problems and they'll all shoot bug holes on a regular basis.

I agree with the other guys. Something you did made that happen.

Now as to the question of "ever hear of a Savage with a bad barrel?" You are kidding, right? (answer, oh heck yes!) Most Savage rifles shoot better than they should, but they send a lot of them out the door with bad barrels. My one and only Savage was one of them. Just check out Savage-shooter forum and you will find a bunch of posts on bad barrels.

Unfortunately you guys might be on to something. I broke in the barrel using some of David Tubbs polishing bullets. Part of the process involved cleaning multiple times with Bore Tech Eliminator and Copper Remover. I followed the directions down to a T. I must have screwed something up. Crap. Nothing like a slice of humble pie first thing in the morning. Thanks for the info guys.

On a blued chrome moly barrel you really have to be careful what you use. Eliminator is probably the worst for that. Sweets is a no-no as well

Look on the bright side: this may work out for the better.

Chamber brush with some hopes and a drill will fix it. Chem cleaners are good, just have to make sure they are all cleaned out when done

Are Y’all thinking Savage will just screw a new barrel on it? I bet that is cheaper for them than the man time of cleaning that one up.
Good question. I wonder if they would let me pay the extra money to have them put an upgraded barrel on it?

The ammonia cleaners will also etch SS. Don't ask me how I know.

I will once again throw in my thoughts on Wipe Out. I have used it for a long time, with no rust issues. It may not be the "best" or fastest cleaner, but it works. It may discolor some stock finishes, but most bore cleaners will also.
