Planning out a new build. The purpose for this rifle is target only, no hunting. Currently not competing in anything.. and I'm unaware of any matches in this niche anyway (Seems to be a void between 1000 yard fclass and ko2m stuff). If one pops up.. might be interested and would use this build.

    Elevation: 1000'

Action: Most likely a gunwerks grb (I have a coupon). Probably a long action.

I already have a 338LM. Below that I have a 260 and a 308, so there's gap. Looking for something that can fill that gap.

I'm all over the map at the moment... as small as a 6.5 prc and as large as a 300 prc. Looked at 284, 7 saum, 300 wsm, 280ai, 7 rem mag.. Would prefer something that's not too hard on barrels but its not a deal breaker.

    Not interested in wildcats.

Brass availability is a key consideration (Lapua, Peterson, even a steady supply of hornady brass is okay).

    Let's hear some ideas :)

Seems appropriate to fill that gap with a 300 Norma Mag (improved). Very good heavy bullets today for the 30s. I think they'll give the 338 a run for it's money.

Ditto all above! You might be surprised how well a 7 saum or 300 wsm might do!
At 1400 the 7 saum is great!

I've got a 7SAUM L.A. Bighorn with 550 rounds on it that is going to be looking for a new home soon.
    6 shot 850 yard group.
    I wasn't shooting it!

Shoot to 1800 with a Good Ole 7mm Rem Mag and 180 hybrid's on a pretty regular bases. We have a 36" gong we shoot at. Mounted behind it is a two way radio set on VOX. so that when you hit the target it rings and keys the mike and you hear the hit at over a mile like your right next to it. Easy Peasy.

Honestly I would really look at the 300 norma or norma improved. My improved shoots lights out while fireforming with factory ammo. Its way cheaper than other magnums to shoot given the fact that youll never wear out the Lapua brass for it. The primer pockets are the toughest ive ever seen. Ive heavily abused them and they didn't loosen up. 100 pieces will last Several barrels. That cant be said with any other bigger magnum that im aware of. 300 Prc is toast in a couple firings with warm/hot loads. The norma improved is by far the easiest to tune and most accurate magnum Ive seen. Nodes are almost a grain wide. .1s & .2s is the norm for accuracy. Single digit es. You can push a 215 berger over 3200 fps no problem in a 26" barrel. Ive shot mine to 2250 yds so far and it performed phenomenal. It has over 600 rounds through it and still shoots lights out. I would imagine the barrel will last 1000-1200 rounds no problem. About a 1/3 of the throat erosion of my 28 nosler.

The Norma does look very appealing but I don't believe this action can use a lapua bolt head. If the ranges I frequent implement a caliber restriction (seeing more and more of those in my area).. I'd swap my 338LM to a norma.

This new build will have to stick with a standard magnum bolt face. The biggest cases with that bolt are what, the RUM and 28/30 Noslers?

I think everything mentioned in this thread so far would work pretty well.

Where is All this 300 Norma Mag. Lapua brass at Ryan ?? - I have had back-orders placed for a Year now with 2 distributors (Graf & Son's & PV) and I don't feel that purchasing Berger 300 Norma Mag Ammo at 80 bucks a box of 20 to be an economical solution. - I'm not "hacking" on Lapua or anyone else, But WHERE's all this Lapua 300 Norma Mag Brass at ???

I've had no problem getting brass for .338 Lapua , new or once fired. Avg's $1.50 a round or so.

Understand - I should have & will clarify 300 Norma Mag. Brass manufactured by Lapua. -
Pretty much everything else Lapua markets is pretty easy to get ahold of - Except this 300 Norma Mag. Brass.

Gotcha, I guess I could have inferred had I paid a little more attention - sorry for that.

    Btw - Tesro is showing stock but at a premium - $239 / 100rd - https://www.tesro.ca/lapua-300-norma-mag-reloading-cases-box-of-100.html

300WSM - clear winner in my book.
    great barrel life
    decent brass available
    ridiculously accurate
I can't see a reason to not build one for this purpose.

Buy it from Canadian retailers. Theyve had it instock for a while. Ive sent a bunch of customers to Tesro. I bought 4,000 rounds of loaded ABM ammo on clearance. Paid my sister in law to pull the berger bullets and powder. Then I had 4,000 pieces of lapua brass.
