Is there a trick to this? A way to dampen it some? I have settled on just rotating the barrel very slowly and this may be the trick. I hope there is a better answer though.
If it matters I use it stuck out almost level to indicate the end and as far in as I can reach while just moving lathe carriage in and out.

Those indicators are very very good. The way I use mine is bring it around to the top of a land, give the arm on my noga base a flick to settle the needle. Then go 180 to the opposite land and do the same thing. These long stem indicators are not accurate without a little flick to settle the stem in my experience. Your not gonna just throw it in there and spin the chuck. I can easily indicate a bore in to better than .0002" with mine and very quickly.

I will give this a try. My current way is anything but quick!!
Also am i understanding correctly that you are not measuring it while rotating?

I stop at each land and flick the base arm to settle the needle.

What size is the ball tip on the stylus, the largest one you can get will help.

Get the length tip you want with the largest ball that they come with and it will work better for indicating the lands and grooves.

.1181-.0787-.0394 I think the largest I could get for my long reach was .0787
